RECAP: Free Hands Friday #76 JRJ
SUPER! Is the best word I can use to describe this session! JRJ, along with Boaz and Dan C. joined us for a great session just now. We learned a lot about what inspired JRJ to be a musician as well as a Stickist. JRJ had great suggestions for finding your inspiration - your solarplexus! JRJ also had some great ideas about when to get a Chapman Stick - NOW! Here is a top ten list of our favorite tangents from this last session (which were encouraged): 1. The inevitability that at some point in your life as a Stickist, you will purchase or swap out a Stick with JRJ 2. When you build a bond with another Stick player that is positive, friendly and helpful - you've "DONded", which is like "bonding", but done in manner of Don Schiff (talented, humorous and handsome, not necessarily in that order). 3. We displayed the proper way to do a Tim Tam slam (Aussie friends will approve) 4. The new lesson is... PLAY! (Don Schiff) 5. Boaz put out the challenge to metal Stick players - where are you? 6. There are only four degrees of separation with Steven LeBeau 7. Mike Kemp (nailed the song in a day project) is mighty 8. Tip of hat to the Daniel Marks video-it-or-it-didn't-happen phenomenon 9. Emmett is a genius and super fun to hang out with 10. If you are going for a drive in the mountains, it will be infinitely more fun with Jan Hellman driving (and you in the sidecar). We had a lot of fun in this session. We learned a lot about how to approach the instrument and the importance of having fun while doing it. Big thanks to Boaz, Dan and of course JRJ - happy Free Hands Friday!

Back at you Boaz, much appreciated. I really love JRJ's approach to music, very refreshing to hear it in his own words. Watching again now!

Thats on the watch list then, for when I get home to a broadband net connection. Some most entertaining key points. TimTam Slams, we eats lots down here. Mikes songs in a day, brilliant. And where are those metal stick players Boaz, good point.. Riding in Jans Sidecar, which I've actually seen for real, too much fun. But its all great! Well done with all the FHF Gene. b

As someone with my first Stick on order I have watched several of these FHF and found them tremendously helpful. Thanks Gene for doing it!

Yuta and I enjoyed this one, Gene. By common effort and with totally different slants and takes, your fact finding group arrived at quite an accurate Stick story, I thought. Also, your featured guest JRJ seems to celebrate his life as a work of art in progress, but shies away from aggrandizing himself on the journey - a remarkable discipline and tension. It's my good fortune that he applies The Stick uniquely as part of the celebration.
Brother Dan, of course, was there in the early years and set the record straight where need be. In a weird way it's gratifying to see your life on a reel before your eyes, fast forward or backward to any pivotal point in time.

Great session guys! Was nice to finally see JRJ,..we've all heard a lot about him,....cool to listen to his insights on playing, method and approach. His take on separating the ego from playing or recording is interesting. Although, he's concerned about his "look",he shouldn't be,.....dood looks like a rock star,....and he shouldn't be wary of playing upon that.
Dug the bits about the Gene trade, Emmetts vision to conception to market, and general Stick talk.....loved the JRJ tribe comment,....he's right on there. We are definitely tribal here...still an undiscovered tribe, but the difference is, we want our tribe to be found.
cheers, kev

Thanks for sharing that all, so great to hear you enjoyed this as much as Dan, Boaz, JRJ and I did.
It was a real pleasure chatting with JRJ. It was nice to hear that he took the session as a way of kickstarting some projects he's been wanting to start / finish. I'm looking forward to it.
