Post Re: FREE HANDS FRIDAY #74 - The TAGG Interface
As Kevin and I were chatting offline, he mentioned that I'd need a beefy stand, and I'll be rocking a heavy-ish Railboard as well on it. I needed to get a new stand anyway, and Gene tells me I'm getting TAGG v1.2 production model 002--and I also can't make the FHF but I definitely plan to catch it later--so could y'all also maybe address what makes a good heavy-duty stand to rock a Stick with the TAGG?

I'll probably just order one from Sweetwater/Geetar Center, so any recommendations there would be appreciated!

I'm looking forward to Free Handsing with Free Hands! And standing! And no belts! And I can switch back and forth between keys and Sticks, and geetars, and basses, and xylophones, and cymbals, and drum pads, and flugal horns, and ...so excited! :D

They'll blow their Who-whoopers, they'll bang their gar-dinkers. They'll beat their drum-dinkers, they'll slam their slew-slumpers. They'll beat their flung-floopers, they'll slam their who-wunkers. And they'll play noisy games like zoo-zinger-car-zay -- a roller skate kind of lacrosse and croquet. Then they'll make ear splitting noises galooks on their great big electro-who-cardio-shnoox.

I've been using this one for a couple of months. It's very heavy/heavyduty.

Tama HC83BW - $89 from a local music store.

Looks great! But there are 3 options: straight stand, for $79, boom stand for $89 (which was the one you linked to and are probably recommending) and boom stand with weight for $109. Would the straight stand work, or do I really need to have a boom--or even the boom with weight? Sorry for what might be a stupid question but I'm going to order sooner rather than later. Thanks, Russ, and anyone who can chime in! (I'm probably stealing the best or worst questions for FHF!)

Not sure how the genuine TAGG hooks to the stand, but the one I built has an embedded bolt inside that lets me screw it on the arm and adjust as needed. I couldn't wait for a TAGG so I built my own...thrown together, and way over built, but I didn't want to take the chance on it failing. There are some interesting challenges that need to be overcome when building one of these. The genuine TAGG looks wonderful.

(there is actually an embedded NUT in the holder, not a bolt like the picture says.)

The Tama stand that you have listed looks good Steve. This is exactly what I paid for a Pearl stand at Guitar Center, the KEY feature being that the boom arm folds down into the stand, in essence, making it a straight stand. I started off using it as a boom, but have since converted it to a straight stand. If you buy the stand from a GC, you have a 30 day return policy.

I enjoyed seeing how you configured your stand Russ. It's good to have options. I am not able to see the instrument mounted on the stand from a distance, but would be curious to see that.

The reason that Matt from Heartstrings doesn't use a TAGG anymore is that EXACT reason - his Stick fell over. That is going to be a risk that Stickists will need accept. With all this freedom comes responsibility. So, maybe one less scotch mid-set, keep drunk chicks at an arm's distance and if you are playing out live with it, tape down your cables. I am hoping KC can share some of his thoughts on the matter as I am pretty certain he uses his for practice and performance.

I actually didn't realize that the boom on my Tama stand actually slides down in the center of the center post allowing a straight vertical support...thanks Gene. if using the arm, you need to make sure that the extended arm is in line with one of the 3 legs, not centered between 2 legs, making it very prone to a tipping over disaster.

Interesting , never really thought of this approach, cant really imagine not being able to move around whilst playing but we all have different takes on that.
Stuck on the pirateship so bandwidth not really good enough to stream video tonight. Be good to watch later.

And Kev , thats a curious point , my three kids are getting so expensive perhaps its time to put them on the market! :o
