About your shoulder and back problems...I also have a serious shoulder problem. It's tough for me to play it vertical like many players here. I adopted a position where the hook of the Stick is more on my right side and the neck more in a position of a guitar/bass normal position. I had no choice to change my position after a huge surgery I've been through in August 2012. That is also a problem for me to play my electric cello (maybe I will sell it soon...too much problem with my left arm) because I need to put my left arm higher than I can possibly do. It's tough. I love my cello but if I cannot play it correctly...I'm a bit sad about that situation. Each time I need to tune my stick (specially on the bass side) it hurts a lot. Many time, before playing it, I put it on my knees and I tune it that way. I switch the stick in reverse position (easier to reach the keys with my right hand) to tune guitar or bass side.

Good luck man, I know what you're talking about. Last note...you wrote it's easier for you to get a stick than a Kelstone. I don't know if you were talking about the price. The Kelstone is cheaper but I really think this instrument need things to improve. I wrote to the guy who's making it and I made a positive critic about his instrument, telling him what he needs to change to be better. I don't know if he listened to me but...that was the only thing I could do. It's a nice instrument and depending the model you buy it can be better...up to you. On the other side, you have to consider the price of transportation, customs and all extra fees. I sold mine to a guy living in Colorado...maybe 4 or 5 months ago.

Take care...

N.B. Did you look about an Harpejji?

ive played mine on my lap when i was too lazy to put it on and had fun with it. i also am of the thought of Bob, having one of my Sticks sitting horizontal, with a totally tweaked out Zappa/Jimi out of control solo sound that would bleed thru if i were to do it on one Stick. and lesson Two of Free Hands Emmett says "The only thing you can't do is blow in it". Proper Technique? Bah.

I'm interested in hearing the details, clue me in please.

Well...it's heavier than the stick...the reason? A lot of metal in the construction. The one I bought had only one pickup. It should have 2. I think there is another model with 2. The tuning system is not really fun. You have to tune your instrument with an allen key. A lot better with normal keys. The way it's mounted it comes with a stand similar to a piano stand and it's not really stable. Tough to play when you want to sit down. In fact, it's a lot better on your feet. You have to give an angle to play it in a more suitable way...difficult to give it the perfect angle with the way it works. I really like the basic idea of this intrument but it has to be polished. It is fun and more visual on the other side. You see clearly where you go on the instrument. It's almost as visual as a piano can be. If the constructor makes some changes that could be a very nice way to play horizontally plucked strings...a bit like an Harpejji. I really hope that'll be better in the future. The idea is good, the results are so and so.

Yes, Harpejii's look really nice. I'm really fascinated by isomorphic instruments. Isomorphic meaning same-shape. So all the chords and scales have the same shape -- they just start on different notes.

The Kelstone has an isomorphic tuning:

Is there any similar tuning for the stick?

The Kelstone is tuned in 4th. So is the stick on the guitar block. On the bass side (left hand) it is in fifth...with the biggest string in the middle of the neck and the small string close to border. It's like looking at a reversed cello or left handed cello...lol.

Thanks for your response. I agree for the most part. Heaviness (not handheld / strapped on, so not an issue) and tuning are a don't care for me and I'm too tall to play the Kelstone comfortably standing up. And yeah, more pickups, I bought my one pickup model used and i'm OK with it. I can't imagine why anyone would want to simultaneously play two tho........

and one last comment from me on the Kelstone......

String spacing is perfect (IMO) for LapStyle playing tho far wider than any currently available TouchStyle instrument........

I forgot another detail about the Kelstone...you can transform this instrument easily to play it like a steel guitar by ajusting the bridge...If I remember well there are 2 screws you can adjust for it. Very nice possibility on this Kelstone.

Lap style is definitely one of the things I want to do with my instrument.
