Post Lap Style
Does anyone play a stick in the "lap style?" Or are stick design for playing in a vertical position? Are there any sticks that are more conducive to lap style? How about tunings for lap style?

I saw a video once of a guy playing the Stick lap style. But myself I really like the belt hook and vertical positioning. However, there is another two handed fretboard tapping instrument, called the Kelstone, that is designed for lap style playing: http://www.kelstone.be/

I had in the past a Kelstone and I sold it (I prefer my stick) but that can be what you're looking for. Quite interesting for people who like it. You can combine two of them.

Good luck

Yes, so I've seen the Kelstone and that in some part inspired my questions of a stick being played lap style. There's obviously a lot of similarity between the two and I would imagine that a Stick is probably the higher quality of the two. It's been around longer and has gone through a large number of revisions to perfect where it is today. So the ideal situation would seem to get a stick and play it like a Kestone. That way I would have a high quality instrument and could experiment with a lap style playing.

So I guess the question would be is it possible to adapt a stick to a lap style way of playing or is it just totally out of the question and I shouldn't even consider it.

I need to ask the question. Why do you want to play it lap style? The Stick is not a piano, there are multiple dimensions of strings and frets. The ergonomics makes it much easier to play in a vertical position. However, many have tried playing it like that. Here's an example:

Dean is here on stickist and maybe he'll chime in, he plays it vertically, too.

With all due respect to all:

The Kelstone (r) is of no lesser quality than a Stick (r).

Observe Trey Gunn Lapstyling his Warr (r). This requires nothing more than a suitable Keyboard stand, his axe will not move on it, and a mental adjust to the style, not sure how he's tuned. Ergonomics are his reason, view on his website, playing is outstanding !!! Tried it, not for me, tho it would relieve one of the shear weight of the instrument. Sticks move around on the stand too much, wouldn't recommend it. "Totally Free Hands" ??.

XX made a "permanent" Lapstyle fixture for his instruments, there was a demand and he met it. Never tried one.

Lapstyle on a short scale length Touchstyle instrument doesn't work for me.

Have you tried a "lap bar" ala RJ Goos' ?? XX's instruments ship with one and they work to my satisfaction. This would allow sitdown playing and FreeHands (r).

No qualms with Lapstyling here........

Actually, last time I saw Bob Culbertson, he was playing two sticks simultaneously, and one of them was on a stand, "lap-style."

My bad. I really have no idea about the quality of either. A stick would at least be easier for me to get, since I'm located in the US.

I have some neck and shoulder problems and I think it would be easier to play horizontal instead of vertical.

I totally agree. That's the really cool thing about it. There are similar instruments played lap style. As someone mentioned there is the Kelstone and then there is the Harpejii that Stevie Wonder has fallen in love with:

I guess that's where we disagree, but I don't really know. That's one of the attractive things about the Stick is that I could potentially try both playing positions and see which I like better.

Thanks for the you tube link.
