Post Ramon Ricker Jazz series - Pentatonics?
Anyone familiar with the Ramon Ricker Jazz series - Pentatonic Scales for Jazz Improvisation?

I got this book off of Amazon dirt cheap, had rave reviews but I found it to be a bit confusing? He does NOT mention Major or Minor pentatonics but rather Modes of the pentatonic scale. Seems like an odd approach but I do see where it could be useful but what I was really looking for was some patterns to practice, which there are many but its up to the user to find what would be the minor vs major yada yada which is ok I guess.

I just wonder if the concept of Major vs Minor pentatonics is relatively new? I think the first publication of this book was 1976!

Here's a great resource for jazz pentatonics

http://antonjazz.com/2016/01/pentatonic-scales/

It's cool I rarely think pentatonics while soloing. But it legit.

Thanks Brett, I'll check it out. I need to have them under my fingers so I can discriminate against using them latter! LOL :)

Oh absolutely I studied with Jerry Bergonzi believe me I have played my share of pentatonics.

And btw Major and minor pentatonics are the same thing starting on different notes. C major (cdega) = A minor. (Acdeg) so that's most likely why they don't discriminate.

There's a ton of resources for the Scales themselves and the different "positions" ala "CAGED system" yada yada... But what I was looking for was patterns that could help establish the tonality in my hands and ears in a melodic approach vs just playing scales. This Ramon Ricker book does have those, but I just have to determine if its major or minor and yes like you say depending on the starting notes. I've never heard anyone else describe them as different "modes" of the penatonics. So I'll take what I can from it and not subscribe to yet another system of terminology. If that makes any sense. ;) ;)

I still have this book. One thing I remember about it is the way you can use it to play out and then resolve inside the tonality. I didn't look at it too much though. Joe Farell (soprano sax) was a great example to listen to when we talk about pentatonics.
