I watched some of this. I'm not a fan of "shaking out the hand", but if this helps you and you don't find any il effects from it, by all means.

I can't speak for the instrument you are playing currently, but with the Stick, if you position it right, the combination of relatively low tension, very low action, and arm positions that minimizes left wrist bending, it's probably the easiest stringed instrument to play from a physical standpoint, especially when played "crossed". The hands are very open and comfortable.

Ergonomics aside, fret to fret movement spanning more than one fret requires a stretch in the hand especially if you want/need to anchor on a lower note etc.. I can't help but think there's some benefits to getting more dexterity in the hand?

I've always been of the mind that "stretch" is something that should be undertaken very carefully... As a guitarist, I found that the best "exercise" in that regard was to just play a challenging physical movement at a higher fret, and then gradually move my way towards the headstock. Everyone has a different physiology, though and different needs and interests...

For me, I had a moment on Stick where I had a realization that for the most part, it's about "putting" your hand in the area, and tapping the note. Getting out of a "position playing" attitude really helped. Even some difficult scaley things can be done with only one finger. Stretching the fingers in the hand does seem to happen with chords, but for that I just work on the chords in a higher position and gradually work my way to the headstock. I guess anything can happen! Plus, I have no idea what a Megatar is like to play... Lol

Of course you are lightyears ahead of me, Pete - so all I can do is offer my two bits! Haha

I have, I'm a huge Shawn fan actually. His big diminished string skipping and maj3'rds stacked ideas are awesome. Really a gifted musician. I gave him an Ibanez Universe...

Cool to have met him while he was still here!

One more amazing stretch, my hero Frank Gambale!

I'm a big Frank fan too. Really awesome player, I've seen him a few times. Awesome musician. Really unique style in my opinion... I love his work also.

A lot of those stretches aren't too bad on a guitar, but geez... on a Stick? Yikes! lol

Yes! I got a chance to meet him at Guitar center last year at a DV Mark demo and seminar, He spent more time on technique than talking about the amp and ran almost 3 hours! Amazing!

His Technique books 1 & 2 are really helping me out with Improvisation!
His approach is to be able to solo over any chord type by breaking down what Intervals, what scales, what pentatonics, what arpeggios etc.. work over the various chord types. I'm still on chapter 1 book 1 because I want this stuff mastered not just touched. Sorry for the redirection! LOL

HI Gents.

While some of those stretches look good, it's important to remember there are no muscles in the hand. Any comprehensive stretching needs to involve the shoulders and pecs.

I didn't listen to the audio from the vid, I just skimmed over the visuals, so I'm sorry if I missed anything.

I think most of us have had the experience of leaning over to look at the touch board . This has more to do with fatiguing our hands than playing Stick, unless ones tapping is overly heavy. Tapping too hard is something I've had to look at.

Looking down to the Stick will crunch the neck muscles associated with nerve endings that go through to the hands.
