Take a bow.

Here's one still frame from several hours shooting. It was the culmination of a sensational event, when all the players got up on stage together. From left to right, Mauricio Sotelo, Emmett Chapman, Francisco Sotelo, Gene Perry and Greg Howard. Greg came to LA from Virginia for the show. And the brothers Sotelo all the way from Mexico City to The Guitar Merchant in Canoga Park. !!!

We started off the evening early with a rollicking backstage session of Free Hands Friday, with multi-cultural visitors from Canada, Israel, Australia, etc... It was 3am in Tel Aviv! Thank you Boaz for joining us.

Emmett played a new innovative electronics unit made by BOSS that I'm told will be "the death of midi." More on that later. :) His new brushed bronze metallic surfaced Railboard was a joy to shoot. Like Jennifer Lawrence, every angle is a great angle. A still just won't do it justice. I will be posting some motion soon.

Mauricio and Francisco are two brothers, who form the duo, Cabezas de Cera. This was the last performance of their long US tour. They were a big inspiration to everyone. All players were moved to perform at their top level of playing. It was a magical night. A celebration.

Thanks for sharing this image Dan. And thanks to Michael J also. Cabezas de Cera were absolutely amazing. Both Francisco and Mauricio were looping parts on drums and Stick at the same time, layering and texturing odd rhythms and playing their butts off - I have never seen anything like it.

Greg and Emmett were solid. Greg was laying off the effects and seriously putting down straight up steel on wood. He opened with Goya's Dream and absolutely killed it. It was great to see that Emmett had effectively replaced the single space rack that he had been carting around with a Boss SY-300. One would never have known he had replaced it as the sounds were pretty much identical. He sounded great. My mom was there and he was her favorite that night (closely after me, cause she's my mom).

The FHF that we had that night was totally and completely improvised. Tip of hat to Nathen, Boaz, Kevin-C, Lee, Michael J., Russell, Dan and Greg who all put their back into making for an enjoyable evening of Stick talk. We did not get to talk to Emmett or Mauricio very much, but it was still a great hang - hope that you all can make it out the Guitar Merchant someday soon to join us.

Gene, you had a serious sound going on. Your pedal-board has evolved to a place equal to your playing. It was a real treat to hear you. Thanks for allowing me to be a part of one of these great events.

Emmett's plasma-coated Railboard looked and sounded great. And I dare say I've never heard anyone cover "Beyond the Sea" and "Hotel California" in quite the same way ;)

I took tons of pics. Here's one of Emmett's expressive moments.

Cabezas de Cera are fearless sonic explorers, and master performers. What a treat to hear them together and to get to jam with them as well.

Another shot of Mauricio introducing Emmett

first set notes:

Em Demos BOSS guitar synthisizer and goes right into his first tune.

set list
La Mer
ROCK-maninoff (Theme from Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2 in C Minor, Op. 18 - 3rd movement, allegro scherzando)
Hotel California ("You won't believe it")

Altogether Em's performance is loose and fluid.
He's in top form and "The Stick of many colors" is magical looking on camera.
So much shimmering and reflection. Fun to watch.

Everyone was inspired by the Sotelo Bros.

Great shot, Dan!

Here's one that Gene took from side-stage during the last jam:

What is the instrument at the bottom right of that pic? Who is playing it?

Curious minds need to know!

Sounds like it was a great evening.

Hey Eric, we were both wondering that! The brothers create a their own instruments, mostly out of hard metals, of which this is one.

This is an interesting article on what they do. They both use sophisticated setups and they both loop. Pairing these two up with Emmett and Greg was pretty incredible to witness. Hoping Dan got some video that he can share.

Thanks, that's insanely cool.

I'm sure it would be interesting if I could read it. Sigh, I feel limited speaking only one language. (I'll try google translate. Heh.)

In the above pic and on a couple songs during our concert, Mauricio plays what they call the Jarana Prisma, which was made by his brother, Francisco. It has a very cool eastern feel. That night he first played it on their song Prismática.
