Post the Stick, GK3, GRXX and Midi
Hello,
Interested, how many use the GK2/3 option with the Roland Devices (GR XX) or Midi
The GK3, SY300 and GK55 are named, because they are as an option on the SE Hompage.
For those who mention: I know that the GK is not a Midi Pickup ;-)

It would be nice to help us with the survey because then we can probably organize an online chat (FHF) with the gurus in this section.

thanx
Gerald

Thanks for posting Gerald, hoping Stickists take a minute to participate.

Post Re: the Stick, GK3, GRXX and Midi
I used to play with a gk2-a many years ago, but finally gave up because of two main reasons : the triggering was sometimes sloppy and the sounds were between average and "Meeh"... and i decided that i preferred the natural sound of the stick. I installed the gK2-a myself. It wasn't a big concern and i installed it pretty well. The main problem came from the Roland GR33 i used then that was not so nice.
A friend just bought a SY300, and it sounds quite good to my ears. So if i'd need some extra flavours, i'd go this route instead.

When I was taking lessons with him years ago, Steve A. had a really cool Roland MIDI setup that he got some particularly neat sounds from. Not sure if he's still going that route, but hopefully he'll weigh in on this topic.

Post Re: the Stick, GK3, GRXX and Midi
The past few years out at the NAMM Stick Night, Steve has used MIDI as a great compliment to his sound. He uses it very efficiently, nothing over the top.

The MIDI topic is way over due. Really enjoying seeing the results of Gerald's survey and looking forward to an extended open session in November on the topic.

Good job Gerald! :D

Gene will the extended open session be open to anyone like the old ones? If so count me in assuming I'm home on time or depending on when it starts I could contribute how to use midi with out making music ? Ie controlling pedals and mixers

Post Re: the Stick, GK3, GRXX and Midi
The open format is looking to be a monthly event so we can be focused on a single subject with subject matter experts joining us. MIDI is a great start for this process as we all have to ask that question in advance of purchasing a new instrument.

Do I MIDI or do I not MIDI?

I'm hopeful that Gerald will be able to join us as he has done a bang up job so far on providing the questions to the community. Next step is to lock in a time and a date, which does not necessarily have to be on a Friday, for November. Participation is first come - first served and I'm hopeful that we'll have a good deal of our questions prepared in advance so we can, together, create some meaningful content for our Stick friends.

I'm working on finding a good guest for the discussion - Glenn Poorman is the authority in my book, so that Is my first call. :D

You left out "used to use it all the time but grew tired of it" option :D

Back to serious though. My Stick has a GK-2 on it. I briefly used one of Roland's GR units (don't recall which) but just never warmed to it. So I switched over to a GI-20 GK to MIDI converter and used outboard gear for sounds ever since. The last time I was actively using MIDI, I was using the GK/GI combo to drive software synths in a live DAW setup. It actually worked quite well but I pretty much only used synths to create pads in a looper so I ended up gigging with a small keyboard for that purpose. That's pretty much where I'm at now so I honestly haven't used Stick for MIDI in several years.

Only little correction though, option #1 should be GR-55 yes?
