Back on topic, learning a Bach piece (or any classical piece really) has a lot of benefits. In my mind at least, it's time well spent. Just my opinion... I haven't got 30 years to reach a basic level of ability with this instrument either; the next 3-5 years if spent correctly (for me) should yield an advancement to where I want to be with the instrument.

In the case of the two-part inventions it's not just a reading study, nor is it just a performance piece. Take a closer look, and it's a Pandora's box of cool musical ideas that could be used in a compositional, arrangement and improvisational context. Studying Bach has made it way easier for me to play the stuff I want to already. Learning and arranging new tunes, improvising, neck familiarity, etc etc. Shaved decades off of my studies on this instrument already I'd say...

So yeah, Bach is worth it. (To me)

Again, I can't wait to hear Claire's inv...

I would tend to agree, an invention is a densely packed musical picnic basket, and there is plenty to spread out over your picnic blanket :D

There is equal emphasis on leading with the left hand as there is with the right. Bach is one of my favorite bassists for this reason, as he uses the form with intent and consistency. One of my most favorite things to do is arrange for the Stick - arranging Bach is a bit more structured, but always the most rewarding.

Another update:

I feel like this is starting to sound like a piece of music! I’m at a point where it’s all more fluid, I know what each hand is doing, and I can mostly play it how I want. I can now start honing in on the more musical/expressive aspects.

A small side note - now that I’ve re-done the intonation on my bass side, it has helped tremendously. I switched the bass side to medium gauge when I got this instrument and didn’t realize I needed to adjust the intonation (originally a piano player). It’s a lot more fun to play now that my octaves (and other intervals) are in tune. (My thanks to Greg for pointing out the intonation change needed, I had assumed it was just me playing the SG12 badly, which was likely part of it too!)

I have stalled on the first section of the 8th but now that my pedalboard is in order, I am out of excuses. Back to Bach!

And I have made no progress on my (virtual) pedalboard. ;)

Great sessions last night and early this morning Claire. I'm just trying to get those first 8 measures solid. I had been trying to learn more of the piece all at once, but get more satisfaction working slowly and locking in the muscle memory as I go.
