To those of you who have an interest in learning to play, I and curious to know how many would like to be able to read other people's music from scores, that is, piano or choral works as opposed to standards in the Real Book? |

I choose to play by ear but I also like to read (with R.H.) the written melody. To read in reversed 5th on the L.H. (and bass clef) is something I didn't try yet. Normally I can read a bit in bass clef...on bass for example or on cello. |

My preference is by ear. I refrain from looking at the fretboard. I get more information from a youtube video, than I would ever learn from sheet music. |

Im a gigging musician and most of my music is handed to me and I have to play it on sight often. Learning to play stick by music is going to be my challenge but im up for it |

Well I'm not a lurker but would like to chime in. I can't read a note, I do most stuff by a combo of using the Ultimate guitar app to find the accompanying chords, then translate those chords to the bass side of the Stick. I know about 20 chord shapes and that generally gets me by. Most of those shapes were learned by copping David Tipton tunes. Melody is the easy part but I always found accompaniment the hard part to decipher on the Stick. cheers, kev |

Ya I'm with kevin. i cant read music, never could. Played guitar by ear and jamming with really good guys. So most of that was by osmosis. Same with the stick. But I don't jam with anyone that has a stick here. I find for me that youtube vids are awesome. So many diverse artists that you should be able to find something to play in your area of interest to get you started.I don't write songs as of yet on my own. Just covers. Bob Culbertson and Greg Howard and by far the ones that have the most instructional stuff which is great. Learning stick tab really helps too. I watch the vids and just figure it out along the way. Takes a bit longer but if i really put my mind to it I can pretty much learn a tune in a week or so. I use the same techneque as Kevin as well. Bust the bass down then pick apart the melody side and then piece them together by intro, chorus, body and ending. Works for me. I take alot of stuff from Matt Rogers as he plays the Alto like me so its a bit easier. Andy Salvanos is also a big influence on what I learn. Sooo good. right now I am just about at the point of being able to play "Can't Say Goodbye" by Matt. Not a lurker already, yet will add my 2c. I was very reluctant to learn how to read sheet music, cause tabs were fine for simple guitar songs (I've never mastered the guitar). I had to get into sheet music when a) I switched to the stick and could not find a lot of ready-to-play tabs b) started playing songs for which you cannot find any sheet music or tabs for any instrument. I guess I can say I mostly play by ear, visual and muscle memory (I cannot read the sheet and play right away like trained musicians do), but my memory is extremely short-term and the ear is far from accurate, so I had to learn a way to write down the music I transcribed, and that's how I finally had to learn the standard music notation. |

I don't have my Stick yet, it's on order. I can read single note treble clef just fine thanks to 6 years of flute in school. I can (very slowly) pick out right hand on a piano.. I can play super basic rhythm guitar, but until the last year or so, I didn't know what made a "G" chord a G, I just knew it was a certain shape with my fingers. I knew how to "bar chord up" from an E to F to G, but not which whole & 1/2 steps in which order made a scale major or minor. Didn't know what made a 7th a 7th. I cannot even come close to playing by ear. I am partially tone deaf. I can tell if the chord is out of tune, but not what chord it is. I need to get sheet music & practice reading until I can see a stack of 3 notes on top of each other and tell what chord it is. Most of that is just barely in my head because I learn by doing. It won't sink in until I get the stick & start figuring out scale patterns. Steve Adelson spoke with me about that. I'd like to be able to see music written for piano, it seems to be the easiest to find, & read it into chords on stick. I expect that learning the bass end of things will be the steep part of the learning curve. I'd love to see tablature for stick, but I don't want to be limited by needing it to function.. |
