Post I'm excited to finally join the ranks of stick players!
Hey, I'm Zack, a student in southern California, and I just ordered my first stick!

I've been a casual fan of the stick for a while, but finally decided to get one a few months ago, and I'm proud to say I recently purchased a used stick from Stick Enterprises, and it should be here next week.

I've played guitar and bass for several years, and I've dabbled in keyboard/piano. I can't wait to finally get my hands on my stick and start learning. Unfortunately, I'm recovering from a hand injury, so I can't quite play just yet, but I wanted to jump on this stick before someone else bought it. Oh well, I should be back to playing condition shortly.

I've also heard about an upcoming stick seminar in southern California, but unfortunately it falls on a date when I'll be out of the area, and buying the stick has drained my bank account.

Anyways, I'm excited to be here!

Yes indeed - as a Stick beginner, the interesting thing compared with other instruments I've learned and dabbled in, is that the various tutor books and videos don't tell you where your journey is likely to end up. If you buy a guitar, you can have 'Learn Jazz Guitar with John Doe', or 'Metal Guitar the Anthrax way' or 'Finger Pick like Leo Kottke' (if only) or whatever. Those guys give you the tools and show you the job you'll be doing. Stick instructors mostly seeem to give you the bag of tools and let you decide what to do with it, which is both kinda scary and very liberating.

That's one of the things that I'm looking forward to. On guitar and bass I have my favorite styles and techniques, and sometimes I force myself to practice things outside my comfort zone, but I usually end up at the same place. With the stick, not only is it a new instrument and a new style of playing, but I get to both create my own style, AND learn how to apply it to styles with which I'm already familiar.

so far.. i've found it useful to both remember and forget everything i know about all other instruments.

i'm sure that was helpful. ;)

Welcome Locrian.

I think you are in a great geographic location for taking some lessons. Emmett (I'm not sure if he is taking students) , Tom Greisgraber are in So Cal. I'm sure there are many others. And Skype of course.

What kind of music are you into?

The Stick can be applied to any style of music. It's also a spectacular tool for channeling new creative ideas, new to the player and often new to the world. It's truly amazing.
I often refer to The Stick as the unlimited box of crayons.

The stick kind of looks like a big crayon now that you mention it ....

As I read, watch, learn and play I am really impressed with how logically The Stick is set up, tuned, and organized. I'm still working to make the chords I want and learn the note layout, but the logic of it all makes that so much easier.
