so far.. i've found it useful to both remember and forget everything i know about all other instruments.

i'm sure that was helpful. ;)

Jeez, only Stick players use Zen for practical advice :-) Other practical Zen Stickissisms I've met are:

Q: Which Stick should I buy?
A: All Sticks are good - buy the one that is meant for you.

Q: What tuning is best for my purpose?
A: All tunings are good. Use that which works best for you.

Q: How many fingers should I use to play the Stick?
A: It will become clear how many fingers you personally need to play the Stick.

I know the last comment was good practical advice., otherwise he'd have said 'It will be revealed to you...'

Now - are there any Surrealist stick players? I guess Boris Bazuroff is more an Impressionist?

I am an existential stick player (I may be alone in that).

Hey Zack, glad to hear about the new Stick.

I wholeheartedly agree with maxr, your journey will be truly a personal experience. It's a versatile instrument that can be used in place of many other instruments, but it's best when played like a Stick.

I too am based out of southern California and would be glad to jam if ever you want. I am getting ready to pull the trigger on getting a meetup going for Stick players in southern Cal as McCabe's out in Santa Monica has agreed to host it. Drop me a line if ever you want at geneperry@gmail.com.

I'm mostly into metal, but I also work on classic rock and blues stuff as a supplement, but I have no idea where I'll end up with my stick playing.

I'm considering taking lessons, which would probably be over Skype since I'm probably not close enough to any stick players in person, but I could probably make the trip into a more densely populated area for a meetup sometime.

Welcome and Congrats! Skype is great, and the man to do that for you is Greg Howard (ooops, guess I should follow my own advice). I have done workshops with him and I have his instruction dvd and materials, and you can not go wrong... I have heard his Skype lessons are great and he is a "stickler" for 3 finger technique!.
