Uk absentee, Greets from long ago
Hello, i joined to post a wanted ad but thought it would be polite to say hello and out myself here. I used to play an old ironwood 10 string back in the mid nineties but i never adjusted to the closeness of the strings, and I gave up. I have very chunky fingers an play upright bass mostly. I aways regretted not pursuing Le Stick and, years later i'd like to resume but with an 8 string. I am a student, bassist and performer with NS Design Bass, DIY built hardware controllers didgeridoo and flutes. Currently I just ended my second year of my degree studying electroacoustic music at a university in London, UK. Am older and wiser and get to compose with interesting sounds now and i've the stamina to put in the daily practice I lacked in the mid nineties. Before i go that extra push and buy new on a Bass Stick what is the waiting list on a new stick these days? I tend to veer to the avant/experemental side of music ("All the dogs", my latest (on my soundcloud) is straight up 12 tone, harmonic clustering with double bass and a trilogy of flutes) as well as perform with sound samples live. But while I love the slinky bassiness of my NS bass I do miss the "clonk" of those low notes on my old ironwood. And frets! Oh my that's going to be odd! Thats me, in a nutshell... so hi... Hi Fox,
You have some beautiful sounds on your soundcloud page. I'm looking forward to what you will be doing with a Stick!
Best regards, Johannes

I placed my stick order about two weeks ago. They told me my deposit would be due roughly 30 days out, and the stick would delivered about four months after that.

Just an aside but what's the duty situation on ordering a Stick from the US?

There is VAT and duty and a courier "handlng charge.".. For the UK i'd factor about 20% declared price.

Please double check the UK regulations. The European Union import taxes should be 3.7% of the instrument price, plus VAT on the instrument price + the shipping cost. There might also be some sort of administrative fee. You can check the specific import tax here http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/taric_consultation.jsp?Lang=en article XIII chapter 92. I think the goods code for a stick should be 9207900000. Hope it helps, cheers, Daniel.

Huge guess on shipping costs btw and no insurance cover which changes things (for the worst) but it gives you an idea... This should help http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-impor ... lculation/Importing from: United States Importing to: United Kingdom Product description: musical instrument Product category: Electric Guitars Product value: US$2400.00 Country of manufacture: United States The cost of shipping and insurance of importing Shipping costs: US$180.00 Insurance costs: US$0 Total customs value: £1582.27 Import duty: £58.54 Import VAT: £328.16 Total import duty & VAT due: £386.71 Total landed cost: £1968.97 Calculation notes Notes on duty & VAT rates musical instrument has an import duty rate of 3.7% and VAT rate of 20% . Please note that your shipping provider may add an additional handling fee

Anyone know if the duty rate for a pre owned Stick imported into UK is different from a new one from the workshop?

Max its based on declared value, from USA to UK, used or new, it still incurs VAT and import duty at the same rate. Buying used within the EU and shipped to the UK on the other hand incurs no duty or VAT.

Thanks Fox - so now I just need to keep an eye open for a used 10 string Grand with a Stickup coming up for sale in Europe. I think that's possibly a 'don't hold your breath' job Max
