Hi!

I'm considering ordering a Railboard, and would like to meet with Stick players (or a teacher, if possible) in the Chicago area who can show me the ropes. I am an experienced bass player and also play some guitar.

Thanks!

Forget everything you know about bass and guitar and stay out of high winds.(I couldn't help myself - what were you expecting from a guy from Jersey?)

Update on this topic...

  • I went ahead and ordered a Railboard - 10-string Classic tuning, Black with blue inlays and chrome tuners.
  • In the meantime, I've purchased a used white polycarbonate 10-string Stick, Classic tuning.

So I'm beginning to experiment and learn how to play this thing. If there's anyone in Chicago that can assist, it would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

If you have the appropriate computer setup at least a few online video lessons with Steve or Greg would be a good investment.

Video lessons are useful - I'm following them now - but there's no substitute for in-person interaction.

There's a well-known guitar repair shop here in Chicago with which I do business that claims to work on Sticks with some frequency - this implies that there are other Stick players in the area. I can't be the only person in this group in the Chicago area, am I?

Thanks!

Just in case there's a blip in the understanding, the suggestion wasn't about watching online videos, though that's certainly beneficial (and something most of us have taken advantage of).

What Mike was referring to is lessons taken over Skype/Facetime/Zoom. Not many of us have the luxury of being near enough to a Stick instructor to be able to arrange in-person lessons, but a lot of us have taken advantage of Skype lessons. Plenty of options, such as (in alphabetical order) Steve Adelson, Bob Culbertson, Greg Howard, Jim Meyer, Don Schiff, ???.

Hmm...

On the one hand, Zoom lessons were an option of which I was not aware. I had not heard that they were being offered. I'll seek those out at some point...

On the other hand, it's not just instruction I'm looking for. I know other musicians that play the instruments I play already (keyboards, bass, guitar), and there's something to be said for communicating with them on a non-instructional level.

An aside: I would go to the Vancouver event this year, but my passport is expired and I am already scheduled that weekend. Drat!

I remember that there was a map here on stickist.com last decade or even in older times with some members who liked to be located. Too bad this feature is no more.

I realise it's a big place & not exactly 'just next door' to Chicago, but Michigan seems to be something of a 'hot spot' for Stickists.

Matt Tate is in Chicago. He plays and teaches guitar and Stick. He’s on Facebook.
