Post Hello from Michigan
Hi all,

Glad to have found the site... I've been skirting the option of getting a Stick for about 25 years (a friend in Oregon informed me of them). Figured I would drop in, meet some people, and get a little smarter about the instrument and technique.

Earlier this week I found an ad at some Guitar Center for a wood finish 10-string for $1299... needless to say I called right away to ask a few confirming questions about it and after some awkward silence they uttered the dreaded words: "Looks like it was sold." :(

So, back to square one for now... at least now I know about this place so I'll keep an eye on the classifieds and meanwhile can live vicariously through others, ha ha.

About 15 years ago I moved to the greater Detroit area (NW suburbs)... would be glad to hear of others in the area. Maybe I could get a better idea about my interests, or some idea of where to go if I wanted some lessons or something. I generally am pretty good at self-teaching but it never hurts to have a little grounding in the basics and knowledge to avoid bad habits.

Anyway, hope everyone has a good 2020, and thanks for being here and sharing your thoughts and experience!

Alright Pat! Welcome. Read yr other post, keyboard players adapt quite nicely (Greg Howard). I'm in Jersey so no help there but take the leap, the Stick is the Coolest Instrument In The World

Detroit area...you are in luck as you happen to be neck deep in one of the Stick hotbed communities. Look up Glenn Poorman or Steve Oz (Oz's Music Store) in the Ann Arbor area. And there's probably many others that are closer.

Glenn hosts an amazing Stick seminar at Interlochen about every two years. The last one was this past summer with about 34 in attendance.

All the best...

Was surprised at 15+ views on this post already as it seems like a rather quiet forum... good to see it though!

Yeah, I think I am pretty committed by now, particularly given that I was already prepared to lay down the money for that one I found online. Just a matter of finding something in the price range.

Yeah, I noticed that from reading around!

Thanks for the tip, I will check into it. I did come across the seminar at Interlochen. It's pretty far for me and I have some travel issues due to "reasons" lately, but sounds like I have about 20 months to prepare for the next one, haha. I'm sure it is a pretty cool experience.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

Hey Pat.

Welcome, welcome!

Yes, this forum can get quiet from time to time but communication comes in waves as you’d expect.
I’m really happy for you that you’ve taken the plunge. I wish I’d done it earlier, I blinked and ten years went by.

Looking forward to hearing your sounds in the fullness of time.

Xoxo

I think we're neighbors :-)

I actually live shouting distance from Twelve Oaks Mall.

Wow, yeah... quite close. I will PM with some additional details. :) That's what I love about the internet... easy to discuss common interests whether you're a bike ride away or on nearly the opposite side of the planet.

It is interesting how once you get into the "groove of life" it's all too easy for a couple of days to fade into a few years. Fortunately now I'm at least in a spot where I can afford to go out on some occasional limbs!

Is that a good thing, or do I need to keep looking over my shoulder to be sure I don't upset the stick mafia heirarchy..? :?
