Hello from Detroit Stickists!
Hello All,
I am a self taught bass player who discovered headless instruments and shortly thereafter King Crimson.
I have had the pleasure of meeting Tony Levin when he toured in The Stickmen!
I am also blessed to have an instrument that was made by friend and former Detroiter, Gary Jibilian, who was the 1st performer I ever saw play a Stick with his 2 man band Jibilian Glass (Todd Glass on drums). That was forever ago a place we used to haunt call The Music Menu in Greek Town Detroit.
I am a slow learner with the Stick, but that's because I am at a loss to find instruction on techniques. I'm plenty creative, but it's been a fun road though and it will be a life long pursuit =)

Re: Hello from Detroit Stickists!
Welcome, I did live in SE Michigan until last April when I had to relocate to Traverse City. There's roughly 20 or so Stickists around you. Check out Oz's Music in Ann Arbor, look up Steve Osburn the owner. Occasionally a used Stick will show up on consignment there. Always interesting to see an old Polycarb or Ironwood show up there.
Gary was the first guy I ever took a lesson with on the NS, back in 2006. Did you frequent Low Down Sound when they were in business, or the current Berkely Music Store?

Welcome! I'm also in the Detroit metro area, as our a few of us, like MichNS (Steve) said. And there's Steve Osborn in Ann Arbor at Oz's Music to look up. Best of luck and rock it out!

Re: Hello from Detroit Stickists!
Aaahhh ... the Music Menu. I played stick with Coup Detroit regularly in that place. Very disappointed that they closed down. I loved playing in Greektown. I did solo sets with Jibilian/Glass in there as well and then we'd do a cover of the Gordian Knot tune "Redemption's Way" as a trio. Good times.
So we've been doing Stick workshops in Michigan since 1998. It used to be an annual event in Ann Arbor. In 2009 we moved up to the Interlochen Center for the Arts and now it's every other year. You just missed it this summer. Next one will be in 2021.
And lastly ... Bob Culbertson performs at the Ann Arbor Art Fair every summer. So you'll want to catch that next summer.

Dual purpose reply, partly to say hello, and partly to say "me too"... as I've also just recently joined the site. I'm on the 275/696 side of town - would be happy to hear of any people/resources nearby but anyway it sounds like I have some potential exploring to do in the general metro area.
