What have I gotten myself into ?

Post What have I gotten myself into ?
Well after many, many years of being fascinated by the Chapman Stick (first seeing it with a band called Kittyhawk and of course Tony Levin with King Crimson) I took the plunge .......

I just got off the phone with a lovely lady who's name was Cambria at Stick Enterprises and she helped me place an order for the Railboard model. I was quoted a 2-3 month wait, but was also told it would likely be sooner.

I have been playing guitar for a long, long time and have an OK grasp of music theory and am a total gear nut. I have been into guitar synthesis since the early 90's and into all kinds of pedals and guitar modeling for quite some time as well.

I am a retired Electrical/Software Engineer and I now have more time to play and decided it was time to learn how to play the stick. I recently went to a local arts festival where there were 2 different stick players performing and I had a chance to chat with one for a bit. This rekindled my interest - So I will blame him for pushing me over the tipping point. :)

I am looking forward to participating (mostly reading /Learning ) from this forum.

First question is what books/DVDs /Lessons are recommended for a total nube at the stick (using classic tuning) ?

Thanks in Advance,

Ken Cardita aka Curved Light

Hey Ken, welcome! I'm excited for you to start playing! There are a bunch of great resources out there, with books from Emmett, Steve Adelson, Greg Howard and more, some great DVDs from Steve, Greg and Bob Culberson, and a growing number YouTube tutorials, including my own series Tap Theory.

I'm fairly certain everyone i just mentioned also does in person or Skype lessons and they're all extremely knowledgeable and personable.

I'm looking forward to seeing your progress!

Did you order the 12-string rail board?

I ordered a Blue 10 string, with closed black tuners , dot etched into the metal inlays, medium strings and classic tuning.

Very close to the one in the video that introduced the Railboard.

You're a happy retired man...only having fun with this new toy would be enough. I got my first stick in 2010...7 years ago and I'm also an experienced guitarist (since '69 I play every where I can)...I'm 66 and even though I touch my stick (almost) everyday, I consider myself as a beginner...lol. But...I do have fun to explore what it is and all the possibilities we can reach. I'm not thinking about being professionnal because I started too late...but, at the same time it's never too late to learn something new. Just have fun....

...ok, first, welcome...

...just try to get a teacher, it's the shortest way to learn...

Welcome , I can just echo what others have said. Spending a little time with a teacher online is really great, nothing like the imediate presence of an expert player on your computer monitor to really see and hear how its done.

Welcome and congratulations in advance!

So whereabouts do you live? Perhaps there are local players you can link up with.
