Post Well, I'm in
I've been lurking here for over a year I think, and had some degree of interest in the Stick for decades. Finally placed an order and finalized the details in the past couple weeks.

I've played electric guitar for a long time (what, almost 25 years now, maybe, started in my early 20s), but to be honest it was really a tiny bit of recent experimentation with the accordion that convinced me that I could separate my hands and actually play something like the Stick that demands independence rather than coordination.

I guess I'm best described as a happy amateur. I sometimes play in church settings, but really music is something to add to my life and help keep me sane.

One reason for doing it now is that I'm not even really doing the church playing now and wanted something better for solo playing than the guitar. I'm not Joe Pass. Also I'll admit that there is fear on my part of waking up some morning to discover that Emmett has decided to retire and Sticks not being available anymore.

I have some ideas what I want to do with the Stick, but unlike some here whom I know are laser focused, part of the fun for me is also just to wander around and see what I can manage to do.

Welcome to the family! As I'm sure you well know there are a ton of resources out there too help you, ranging from books to DVDs to YouTube videos and more! Maybe this can help you get started and your Stick finally arrives.

Thanks Josh. I've watched many of your videos dating back to the Stick Science ones, and may well wind up subscribing to your stuff for a while.

For example, your recent one on the third voice (only had a chance to watch half of it so far, though) is apropos to one thing I'm interested in, namely working up arrangements of hymns from SATB vocal arrangements. I could do this to a limited extent on guitar (for example, I had a decent - for me - O Sacred Head, Now Wounded with both of the outer voices all the time and at least one inner voice all the time), but I suspect that having more options on the Stick, and especially the option to kind of cross the alto/tenor voices across to either side depending on what will work better, will make this kind of thing easier to do.

Cool! Coming from guitar, you'll have a lot of advantages like understanding the fret "language" and a pretty innate idea of how to add expression you tote playing. One thing to watch out for when you're first getting started though, is that the way to physically fret notes on the stick is different than on guitar and you will have to retrain some of your habits. The habits you've picked up from huitar are completely valid and will come in handy after you've gotten your head around the basic technique, but can lead to some road blocks if you're trying to apply them in a direct parallel right off the bat.

Lucky for me I have a young child and haven't even played the guitar very much for quite a while. :)

But yeah. I have played a little bit of five string banjo too, so I'm totally familiar with having some things transfer and others not. On the other hand, trying some tricks on an instrument where they don't belong may occasionally lead to an interesting discovery.

Oh absolutely! There is a ton of translation and my guitar fretting technique has become more of a hybrid of stick and guitar stuff as well. Most of what you're taking from the guitar will work once you understand the basic stick technique pretty well, just in a slightly different context.

Welcome to the club, the family, the community, the Church of the Stick, the Kingdom of the Stick People, the Land of Stick (a short drive past Sticktown and halfway through Stickopolis)!

We welcome your Rock* into the River coming down from Stick Mountain! (*or Jazz, or Inspirational, or neo-classical, or country, or Proggy Hillbilly 12-tone Serial Microtunings, or whatevs you're into.)

Some of us are laser focused, and some spell it lazer. Some of us have a focus if you close one eye and squint real hard underwater. Some of us make a living on their Sticking, and others of us use our livings to support our Stick habits. Some of us our teachers and ALL of us our students.

Welcome!

Welcome to this forum. Interesting what you wrote..."I could separate my hands and actually play something like the Stick that demands independence rather than coordination" I was wondering where you see the difference. I may be wrong but I see these two concepts as a unique one. Not easy though to reach this goal of independence-coordination.

Joe Pass? Not often mentioned on this forum.
Had the honor of playing with him on a TV show a long time ago.. Sweet man, great player. "Virtuoso" LP. was in my permanent rotation.
Good luck with your musical pursuits. Joe Pass style is a noble yet achievable goal
