Excellent start coming out of the gate, congrats. I have experienced the same issues with pre- amp , phantom power, almost lost my treasured amp.best to you.

Thank you! It's good to hear that I'm not the only one that has issues with phantom power and the Railboard. It is a bit concerning that not more attention is given to this in the manual. Getting this repaired is not cheap :-/

Hi, congratulations on the new railboard. It's a journey filled with amazing discoveries and much reward. Sorry to hear about your preamps. I never had any problem with mine, and I plugg it in to all kinds of devices... maybe the issue is with the preamps themselves?
Either way, welcome to the family ;)
Cheers
Rodrigo

Thanks Rodrigo! My preamps are from Metric Halo, which is right at the top of the spectrum of professional audio interfaces, I've not had a single issue with them in 7 years. However you're right, the Metric Halo preamp is designed to only handle 48V on a channel and not more, and that's why it blew. However, this is sort of expected since you're not supported to short two 48V connections together and that is exactly what happens when you insert the TRS jack into the Railboard with phantom power enabled. I think the active Railboard approach is the only one that does this and I would have expected for the active cable to have some kind of voltage overrun protection built into it to protect other devices and if not to clearly display a warning about this on the cable or in the manual.

Welcome to the Stick community. That’s great progress for one week.

I just got a Linnstrument 128, about a week in on that one myself. I’ve used the larger one previously but haven’t caught up on the newer features. I appreciate all your work on it, I find the interface really easy to use.

Not sure if you accidentally or purposefully plugged/unplugged with phantom power on, so this can serve as more of a PSA: You should never hot-plug/unplug any cable with phantom power on, you can damage equipment doing that even with standard XLR connections. Always have the phantom power off when actually plugging in or unplugging.

Draping/looping the cable over the belt hook when playing will make it extremely difficult to accidentally unplug the cable due to stepping on or snagging it.

There are 48v phantom stand-alone devices, so you could run phantom separate from your mic pres. This is a quick list from the Sweetwater site, there are probably other products available:
http://www.sweetwater.com/c959--Phantom_Power I don’t have a Railboard/R-Block so can’t say how well these devices would work with it.

Hi everyone,

Introducing myself as a new Railboard player.

I received my beautiful black Railboard with aqua glow linear inlays and black open tuners last week.

For a very long time I've been eyeing the Chapman Stick and when the Railboard was announced, I thought it was time to jump on board. It took a while to feel ready to jump on another new musical instrument adventure but a few months ago I finally went for it and ordered a new Railboard.

I've been studying the Eigenharp and the LinnStrument for a few years, and have been playing steel string guitar for most of my life.

The Railboard sort of feels like the perfect combination of all these instruments combined, it feels much more welcoming than I thought it would be and I really love the feel and expressive capabilities of the instrument.

I intend to regularly document my progress on my YouTube channel in a dedicated playlist:

Here is a video after the first week of practicing:

Welome, Geert! I really enjoyed hearing about your first impressions of my own favorite instrument. I have a 36" bamboo Grand but use my shorter scale SG-12's for regular playing, which means every day five months a year and sparse studio recordings during the winter season.

Hi Claire,

Thanks for the welcome message! Glad to hear your enjoying your LS128, we put a lot of love and dedication into it to get it ready before the end of the year.

You're right, I've been doing electronic music for a bit too long to remember to be careful about phantom power connections. Since I never had any problems with my existing gear combinations I got too careless and didn't consider that a problem could occur. Good tip about wrapping the cable around the belt hook, I'll try that!

Take care,

Geert

Thanks Per, that sounds like a nice collection. I hope to be able to learn enough of the Railboard to maybe try out a few other stick versions when I'm at NAMM next month.
