Many thanks for the warm welcome folks...nice to feel included. Looks like my first stick will be a Railboard and it will be some time before anyone hears it as I'm coming from day care on this one despite musical chops in other areas...looking forward to my new venture with great anticipation and excitement
Welcome, Rotur, and good luck with whichever of the awesome colors and possibly shiny coatings you have to choose from! And I'm sure you'll be rocking out soon enough--some experience with other instruments is handy, particularly if you can hang with a little (or a lot!) of music theory. Best of luck!

Post Re: New member from South Australia
Thanks again for the continued welcome...
Happy to report that my railboard has arrived and very happy with it... Came with a hard case and Greg's Free Hand and Steve's ultimate stick DVDs. Also included in the deal was a set of balanced and unbalanced leads.
Now that I've had an initial play I have some questions...
1.The little nut at the top rear of the neck... Does this adjust the action?
2. How hard/light should I be tapping? I get a fair amount of buzz especially from the bass strings
3. The sound is more guitar like than I would have expected... How does one achieve the 'stick' sound?... Is that down to amplification and/or the use of a processor as in a Rane SP13
4. The first fret beyond the felted pads is open string notes...yes?
5. How does one adjust the damping of the felted pads?

Talk soon, Roman

I did check your previous posts, but didn't see what amplification you are plugging your Stick into. That might help, what are you currently playing through?

Currently it goes into either a small squier 15w guitar amp or into my NI Komplete 6 interface into logic... The latter being more stick like in its sound but still needs tweaking. Would like an SP13 or similar depending on what has superseded it if that will provide the desired result

Try as many amps as you can, until you find the tone that you are looking for. I use the Steinberg UR44 and like it very much.

There are some great amp sims in Logic/Mainstage. A great place to explore tones.

My experience with that "stick" tone is a direct sound with some compression. I prefer parallel compression so I squash the crap out of it and blend it in with my direct signal.

Will explore my Logic Pro options further before venturing out. On that, is it still a good idea if an AP 13 is found to have that modified in the absence of finding an SP 13?

So I have a chance to pick up a Rane AP13..., Is it worth the effort to convert such a unit for the stick or should I look at something like a Stepabout? The cost of converting the Rane will be minimal as I have a technician friend who will do the work for me. I can't really afford a Stepabout at present but by the same token I don't want to invest in the Rane if that is now considered old hat...

Congratulations on gettin' on the bus! Most of your questions you will find answers on videos posted by Greg. Truss rod adjustment should probably solve string buzz and TAP SOFTLY AND CARRY A BIG STICK (sorry, i couldn't help myself)
