 Re: Books!!!!!!.....Reading!!!!!!!
My fave reads in recent times include "Duma Key" by Stephen King, "Ape House" by Sara Gruen, and the "Hunger Games" series by Susanne Collins. Great books to wind down with after a long day. Also enjoyed "A spot of bother" by Mark Haddon, an English author who can turn normal everyday events into seemingly hilarious or terrifying occurrences.
I always seem to be (re-)reading snippets of Barry Green's "The Inner Game of Music" and Hugh MacLeod's "Ignore Everybody" too. A bit of motivation never goes astray.
Cheers, Andy

 Re: Books!!!!!!.....Reading!!!!!!!
Ok so I am now totally caught up in George RR Martin's "Game of Thrones" (Song of ice and fire) series.
The prose is a bit choppy at times, but he is a great spinner of tales. I'm halfway through the first book and have 4 more to read, each about 1000 pages. So I should be at this for the next few months.
Oh and there is the TV series which is pretty good as well.
Now back to Winterfell.....winter is coming......

 Re: Books!!!!!!.....Reading!!!!!!!
Quote: My wife and I both enjoyed each book in the "Horatio Hornblower" series of historical/nautical fiction... If you have read through The Silmarillian or some of his "Lost Tales" you know the story, but to read it all fleshed out is a treat. Yes, let's not forget Tolkien. He is the master. What a gift to us all. Quote: I don't think I could get through more than a few pages of Finnegan's Wake in a row (never mind the whole book), but I actually have a copy nearby in my office which I pick up now and again, opening it to a random page just to marvel at a few sentences of the bizarro writing style- kind of opens up the imagination. The thing that awes me about Finnegan's Wake is that it's almost as if Joyce didn't write it at all. It's entirely different from his body of work, and he took an inordinate amount of time to research it and write it. Why? The book is seemingly without plot, no rhyme or reason whatsoever. Unless you approach it with the knowledge that it is written by someone with extensive knowledge of the occult. What would have given anyone any indication he was an adept of occult knowledge? The entire book is an alchemical metaphor. Amazing. Or totally boring, depending on your preferred cup of tea. Hey, anyone else out there a fan of "Lord of the Flies"? Kev

 Re: Books!!!!!!.....Reading!!!!!!!
I'm a big fan of Raymond Feist's Riftwar Saga. The final book set in the world is coming out next spring and it will be book 30. Plenty to read. The series runs over 150 years or so and a few long lived are still around, but long before Martin was killing half his cast, Feist had main characters die on screen and off. Everything from battle to illness to old age I never read the Shanarra books and I recently bought the first trilogy of that. I enjoy Gibson's work but honestly the closer to modern day his stuff got the less interested I became. The Sprawl Trilogy starting with Neuromancer is my favorite stuff of his. I remember being halfway thru the last book of the Bridge Trilogy and just putting it down and not going back for a couple of years. I think I own Pattern Recognition and the 2nd of that series but never have read them. One of these days Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD

Oh, I highly recommend "Satan: His Psychotherapy and Cure By the Unfortunate Dr. Kassler", by Jeremy Leven. The title doesn't even begin to hint at how fun that book is. I think Leven directed a few movies as well, one with Johnny Depp... I think it's called "Don Juan DiMarco". Never saw the movie, don't know if it's any good or not. But a fantastic writer. Hard to find book. I read the entire thing on the trip to and from L.A. years ago when I was dating a chick that lived there.

Brett, if you like George RR Martin, I think you'd like Terry Goodkind as well.

Kris I'm not really a fan of fantasy. I mean Tolkein changed my life, but I have found his imitators to be kinda silly. I was pleasantly surprised with the Martin stuff, it's a fun read. However, I think by the time I finish his 5 books I will need a break from fantasy. What makes his stuff ok with me is the underplay of magic. Thanks for the recommendation though. Brett

 Re: Books!!!!!!.....Reading!!!!!!!
I recently read "I Am Legend". A fun read, and not surprisingly, a very different story than either of the movies that were based on it (Omega Man & I Am Legend).
