Post Come to Maine!
Every week I see post after post about gigs that are happening hundreds of miles away, wishing that my wife and I could attend. Tom G's post about Bert Lams & him being on radio in several areas that are out of reach finally made me post this.
I beg you gigging and established Stickists to consider coming to Portland Maine. Yes, I'm biased because my town neighbors Portland, but Portland is the epicenter of non-hillbilly musical and artistic culture in Maine. (And there's a LOT more than any of you who aren't from Maine suspect.) That self-loving a$$hole egomaniac that Portland used to have as a Police Chief, Mike Chitwood, did his best to kill all club life in Portland, and he and the city council came uncomfortably close to achieving it around 15 years ago, but live music has survived their efforts to sanitize Portland for all the cruise ships they're trying (successfully so far) to attract.
I think anyone who can come here will find a lot of interested ears.
And I'll help with logistics, whatever is within my power.
Just sayin'. If you're looking to gig and you're coming to the Northeast, take a look at Maine (especially southern Maine) as a possibility.

Luc,

Are there any heavy bands in Portland?

I mean, is there an environment which would be favorable to heavy, weird, progressive music? Which bars? Can you investigate?

Kevin, I can think right off of two places: The Asylum and The Big Easy. They have everything from local to national touring acts there, and they've had dozens of different genres at each place. I will say, though, that The Asylum has more of a rep for featuring the heavier stuff more frequently. I would also try Geno's (a real popular dive), the Port City Music Hall, and The Space Gallery. There's also the State Theater, but they do more national stuff there - but they've also done local bands in a multi-band context.

I also had a PM asking about possibilities for small context/solo stick stuff, if I'm not mistaken. Here are some possible places:
One Longfellow Square (nice, intimate space; Jonathan Edwards, who makes his home in Portland, plays there a ton), three Irish bars: Brian Boru, Ri-Ra, and Bull Feeney's, The Dogfish Bar & Grille, and The Space Gallery.

You passed through some lovely country. The coast of Maine is a visual marvel, especially this time of year. (Well, really, the whole state is. If you don't see it, you aren't looking.) Moving further into the state there are lots of things that will remind those of northern European nationality of home, I'm sure.
Thank you for the compliment. I love my home. Let me know if you're ever this way again.

Oh I´ll be back. Don´t you worry. ;)

I´ve been to Maine several times. First time back in -85 when I played with a show group. If I would move to the States then Maine would probably be the spot to settle in. Or at least within New England. Rented a motorcycle in Boston some 12 - 14 years ago and travelled around in eastern Canada. Took the ferry from Nova Scotia to Maine (not in operation no more) and spent some days around Maine. Beautiful. Will definately be back.

Ferry service to Nova Scotia is going to resume. Canada has given the contract to a ferry company, and now they're working out the details and infrastructure in Nova Scotia. (Portland has a new commercial pier that can handle all but the biggest giant cruise ships, so infrasructure in Portland is ready to go.)

Ah! Good news! Did not know that. The old ferry went from Yarmouth to Bar Harbor if I don´t remember all wrong. The ferry trip to Portland should be much longer I presume. But most people probably want to go further south than Bar Harbor anyway so it´s not necessarily a bad thing. Long way to go round on dry land. Only reason to drive around if being in southern Nova Scotia would be to visit Stockholm, Maine. Up near the New Brunswick border. :)
