The Stick stand holder is made of Western Australian Jarrah (pronounced "jarra") hardwood and I mean HARD. It's very dense (heavy) and some doesn't even float! I would love to see a Stick built from it. A dream is to send a blank to Stick Enterprises plus an extra fee for the multiple tool sharpenings that would be required to shape it. Cheers, Simon

Looks like it to me. I guess you're right on his newest CD but on Stickology...hum...I'm not sure...look at this page - http://www.stick.com/instruction/books/stickology/ - it's too dark to be maple.

This one's maybe 7 or 8 years old. I got it from Leo Gosselin recently and it has the pasv-4. I've seen this wood from when it's a freshly cut Stick blank and it's almost pink. Then when it's done and finished w/oil it looks kinda ruby red - almost a wine color. Then after a few years of the natural oxidation process it starts to go a sort of amber. Always beautiful though. It is said that the species of wood has little to do with the tone because of certain physics intrinsic to the instrument but this one sounds crisp and twangy like the sound Tom G gets. The way the laminations are laid out has a lot to do with what I find visually compelling about a hardwood Stick. I saw one particular wenge Grand Stick over at Emmett's shop where they had quatersawn the laminated sections diagonally across the grain in an unusual way and the patterns happened to line up perfectly so that the thing looked like lizard skin. I would have killed for it but it was already spoken for. Tarara can look incredible also and it's among the lighter woods available. Any of the woods offered are a good choice if you ask me. After all Emmett didn't choose them because they're ugly.

Although it would be heavy, I would love to send Stick Enterprises a laminated blank for them to make a custom Stick. I would have to pay a premium to cover the extra tool sharpening that would be required. Cheers, Simon

The Stick on the "Stickology" book is not Maple (obviously). It might be Paduk. Somewhere on the net, like here: http://www.google.com/search?q=steve+ad ... B450%3B240there are some pictures of it. Some look like paduk for sure, others, maybe not . But what about "Maple"? Steve has one and Bob also (me too ). Possibly 'Maple' was discontinued because it did not stand up over time as well as paduk or Wenge, but I like how the old maples show their wear.... *j* .~

I don't know, I've had my maple Stick for more than fifteen years, and it has aged very well. Of course I don't play it as much as Bob C, and I clean it from time to time

I don't believe that is actual wear you are seeing on maple. I think it is just dirt. Lighter color woods are going to show dirt and grime much more easily.

earthgene wrote: Here is a pic from last night's gig at Lorimar. Still a red-brown as opposed to a brown red. It received a Danish Oil treatment about 6 weeks ago when I changed strings. Other than my first Ironwood, I've always had at least one Paduak Stick. I've always wanted a bamboo Stick, someday... +1 to Russell's link, man that should be it's own topic in this forum. This is a fascinating read - I love the bit about keeping the delusion going a little longer... Your instrument is beautiful Gene...and when I look at the place where you played it seems really nice...it looks like an artistic place...nice paintings on the wall...I love paintings...I'm in contact with painters here in Mtl and sometimes I play for them for their "vernissage" (I don't know if there is an English word for that...sorry)...nice pic.

Just want to give you an idea of a pic with and without a flash on a camera...that gives a different impression about the color of a stick...pics are not perfect and the close up isn't either but you can see the difference.
