[quote="arsacane"]I'm not sure about the environmental friendliness; bamboo is of course a renewable resource but epoxy resin is pretty much indestructible and product of heavy petrochemical... Agreed. It's the reason why I put the mention "theorically" in my previous post : epoxy is not ecological for sure ;)

Post Re: Graphite or bamboo?
Hey everyone, thanks for your replies. This is such a supportive community (yet another reason to buy a Stick?)

Really useful advice! I had been thinking about graphite originally but after reading all your comments I am seriously considering bamboo. Same price as hardwood but with partial benefits of graphite (strength / moisture resistance). Light weight also appeals, as does the wider range of finishes...

Ok, will think about it for a while! When I eventually take the plunge I'll post my chosen specs :) Any further comments still welcome in the meantime!

Thanks!! --David

"I consider the Bamboo not as wood but as a composite material; it's bamboo 'stripes' compressed and imbibed in epoxy resin."

"I'm not sure about the environmental friendliness; bamboo is of course a renewable resource but epoxy resin is pretty much indestructible and product of heavy petrochemical..."

"It's the reason why I put the mention "theorically" in my previous post : epoxy is not ecological for sure."

"I can't see how bamboo Sticks are any better for the environment than a regular wood stick, considering the resin issue."

Issues and cases, politicians and lawyers, and the experts always disagree, are trained to disagree.

There's no issue with bamboo as a material. It's not endangered (you have to beat it away). And it's not impregnated with resins. There is indeed one compressed bamboo building material that is saturated with epoxy resin (used for railroad ties in China), and I made about five Sticks out of it, then switched to a laminate structure with regular glue lines like a butcher block.

Bamboo needs no irrigation and no replanting cycles. I call it giant crabgrass.

Amid all the complementary remarks here about laminated bamboo Sticks (and I'm the first to sing its praises), let's not have any giant crabs.

Hi everyone, Scottish newbie thinking of ordering my first Stick. After much thought I'm fairly sure I'm looking at a 10-string with PASV-4. Considering MR or more likely DMR tuning (I play 5 and 6 string basses and also piano so like the option of that low range). Also interested in GK-3 for MIDI. Now which material to go for.....

I have read good things about the graphite Stick but the bamboo seems to be popular too and I wondered if anyone has any comments re the pros and cons of each? Is the graphite worth the extra money or will bamboo be just as good? Any other factors I should consider?

(And are there any other Scottish Stickists out there?!)

Thanks --David

None of the stick woods, materials ect have stability issues. When I think stability I think guitar or bass where neck length and tension can actually be a factor. If your wood stick shifts slightly because of weather and you think you have stability issues so be it, but personally, stability only shows itself when it affects consistency of tone, and your not gonna have that on the stick. The string tension is too low. You'd be better off worrying about fret maintainence. Because that will impact your stick more.

Between bamboo and graphite, it's really just about the weight. Graphite is heavy. Bamboo isn't. Unless you just absolutely love the feel of graphite in your hands get the bamboo.

Thanks for the info Emmet! I didn't know that you changed the material to laminated bamboo; my mistake, sorry for that. One question, Is the glue used in the lamination water solvable? If so how does it handles humidity?

Thanks again for the corrections, warm regards Daniel.

I have a graphite 12 and I've never liked the weight personally, so I'd go for bamboo if I had a new one. My other stick is Paduak and the lightness of weight is refreshing!

Haha! You have a good point there

Thanks again everybody for more useful advice ;) I'm sure the graphite Stick is a great instrument but it sounds like there's a lot of support out there for bamboo, and looking at the new pics on the Stick website, the bamboo instruments are beautifully crafted and have a lovely look and finish.

What colours/finishes do people think work best in bamboo? I notice they are dying it all sorts of colours - does anyone know if there's a definitive list of finishes or can they dye it pretty much any colour?
