Post Is my stick out of tune? hmmm
I'm super new to the stick, and pretty much know nothing about it (playing wise), haha, but I'm starting to have some free time to play it now and learn it, and now all of a sudden, the stick sounds kinda weird on some strings than it used to.

So how would I know if it was or not? Or how would I know to tune it?

Thanks a lot fellow stick players.

Hook it up to the tuner and tap across the 7th(?) fret. You'll know immediately whether or not your Stick is tuned. Of course, you could do that across the first fret, but from what I understand that's not a very good idea and you can do better.

When you pick up a Stick, as with any stringed instrument, you should always assume that it's not tuned before you play it.

Your basic guitar/bass tuner won't work on a Stick because it's only geared to tune bass/guitar. What you need to do is go down to the music store and ask for "a chromatic tuner that will tune to anything."

Hooking this tuner up to the Stick is no different from hooking up a tuner to any other electric stringed instrument.

Any ordinary guitar tuner will work for the melody side, just check the tuning chart on http://www.stick.com for your tuning to make sure you are checking the right frets and notes. If you have a full-range tuner that covers bass and guitar ranges, that should work for the bass side too. I ended up having to buy a new tuner, my Boss bass tuner couldn't handle the higher up melody strings at all.

Cheers,

Justin

I have an old Boss TU-12 that works OK on my guitar & NS, but I always had problems with it on my bass. I had thought about getting rid of it, but when I got my new Stick, the VG-99's tuner will not work on either side for me. So I pulled out the TU-12. It works on both melody and bass better than my other instruments. Must be that good PASV-4 circuit ;) What tuner did you buy?

Curtis posted in Equipment about "turbo-tuner.com". I scoped it out, and for $130, it looks great!

The Turbo Tuner looks like a fine piece of equipment. I use a Peterson and my reasons for getting a higher priced tuner was for doing setups on Stick, guitars, etc. But honestly, if you're just tuning your instrument, you'll get along just fine with a $25 chromatic tuner from Korg or just about any other manufacturer.

To mcmanus ... so you're likely NOT coming from a background in guitar or bass are you? Instruments such as these need to be tuned pretty regularly. Get a tuner and get good at using it.

- Korg CA-30 -

I went to a large music store one day and tried out all of their tuners.

Some tuners didn't pick up the Sticks low notes others the high notes.

This is the one that I walked out with ($20.00).

I saved a lot of money that day.
