Post Removing MIDI damper pad glue (circa 2012 graphite Stick)
Hi,
My recently obtained graphite Stick originally had a MIDI pickup. The pickup wasn't part of the purchase, but on the melody side the extra damper characteristic of MIDI equipped Sticks was still there.

I noticed that in this video Greg removed a unused MIDI damper & that seemed like a good idea.

The damper itself came off easily, but there's a hard glue residue. Fortunately the residue isn't sticky, but it is pretty firmly attached to the Stick. I'm not sure how to remove it.

I'm reluctant to scrape & end up scratching the Stick.

Not knowing what glue it might be I'm unsure what solvent might help, & I'm not keen on experimenting in case I find one that attacks carbon fibre composite, before I find one that just softens the glue!

Any suggestions?

There's a product called 'Goo Gone" which is a yellow, slightly oily liquid. It's used to get sticky tape residue off hard surfaces. I've used it to get stuff off glass, metal, plastic and wood surfaces. It's harmless. The trick is to rub a small amount of it on with a rag and let it penetrate the residue a few minutes before rubbing it off with a rag and you may have to re-apply 2 or 3 times to get it spotless. If you use some kind of implement, start with a fingernail or wooden toothpick - nothing any harder or sharper than that. Goo-Gone leaves a slightly oily film when you're done but it wipes off easily. There are other similar products with different names like "Glue-Away" that appear to be generic versions of Goo Gone but they are more like paint remover and can damage plastics. I ruined a Strat pickguard with that stuff once trying to get the previous owner's hippie stickers off of it.

Mr. Clean Magic Eraser works very well for removing "schmutz" from your fretboard, and it will not harm it.

Thanks for your suggestions, Captain & Greg. I've found a handy UK source for both of those.

I'm sure they'll have plenty of other uses around the house too! :)

In regards to the damper removal, I took my MIDI off my 10 string grand years ago but left the damper material on. I didn’t change the tuning and curious what difference it would make if I removed it. My guess not much difference. Any advice?

I'd not expect any affect on tuning as such?

I removed it to allow the top 4 open Melody strings to ring as they would on a non-MIDI Stick.

It also allows fret 0 (X) to be used if desired, e.g. when assessing intonation. When doing my first Stick intonation adjustements it seemed better to make the job as simple as possible?

Taking a look at the ingredients it seems to be one of the 'lmonene' based 'stcky stuff' removers (there's other stuff in there too).

We have one of that class in the house already. I'll try a tiny drop of that...
