I wonder what the absence of Steve Adelson from that list might say? Could it be something to do with how hard it seems to be to get hold of his albums now (I've no idea about historical availability)? I've no idea about who owns rights etc., & any awkwardnesses that might bring in, but it would be great if they were more readily available, e.g. on bandcamp (Markus Reuter & Steve Lawson recently spent the best part of 2 hours exchanging thoughts, mainly on the subject of bandcamp, going into how it works for them, economics, philosophy, etc.,).

No sign of Bob either. As I wrote earlier in this topic, I've not built up enough experience to be able to offer a well researched 'top 5 yet', but I suspect that 'Cafe San Francisco' would still be a candidate when that point comes?

Those are all good albums. But I miss these 2 very nice albums from Andy Salvanos: Dream recall and Transform. Very tasteful and musical.
By the way: Japan....i will never forget Mick Karn on fretless bass. It is not the chapman stick but it was so different then....

I played fretless back when I discovered Japan (still have one - and my Ironwood is fretless - yes it was a bad idea, but it's still fun). Mick's sound was a little over-processed back then, but I tended to play more with my feet, too. (I love the live album). I used a MuTronIII and Bi- Phase, Big Muff, Morley Wah and a Deluxe Memory Man that I made footswitches for so I could have the box at my fingertips and send the repeats into over-drive. Them were the days...

This is so true. Everything in the 80’s got a big dose of processing. Digits were on the rise so we sloshed them on everything. We have to forgive! I always wanted a backlash to follow, with dry-sounding mixes making their mark, not sure it did...

These days I find it hard to listen to some stuff that’s swimming in reverb, it’s a pity really...

[1] Not just a list of people, so not necessarily the same number of stickists, e.g. there are entries for Stick Men, King Crimson & CGT as well as for Tony Levin, Trey Gunn, Tom Griesgraber.
