Post Re: Top Five Essential Stick Albums
I just wanted to say thanks for all the love for my recordings. I've tried to make each a unique and complete musical work, and it's nice to know they still resonate with you all.

Most of my titles are available as downloads on BandCamp, I think

https://greghoward.bandcamp.com/

and I have lots of AZUL, Stick Figures, Holly and the Ivy, and Sticks and Stones on disc. If you want to pick some up, drop me a line or visit my online store.

Thanks again.

The world gets a bit more interesting if you list by Artist. At this point the top artists nine (again, there's a tie at fourth place) are:
Howard 13
King Crimson 6
Gunn 4
Cerletti 3
Chapman 3
Cides 3
Gordian Knot 3
Griesgraber 3
Lampi 3

I wonder what the absence of Steve Adelson from that list might say? Could it be something to do with how hard it seems to be to get hold of his albums now (I've no idea about historical availability)? I've no idea about who owns rights etc., & any awkwardnesses that might bring in, but it would be great if they were more readily available, e.g. on bandcamp (Markus Reuter & Steve Lawson recently spent the best part of 2 hours exchanging thoughts, mainly on the subject of bandcamp, going into how it works for them, economics, philosophy, etc.,).

No sign of Bob either. As I wrote earlier in this topic, I've not built up enough experience to be able to offer a well researched 'top 5 yet', but I suspect that 'Cafe San Francisco' would still be a candidate when that point comes?

Hi there,

Those are all good albums. But I miss these 2 very nice albums from Andy Salvanos: Dream recall and Transform. Very tasteful and musical.
By the way: Japan....i will never forget Mick Karn on fretless bass. It is not the chapman stick but it was so different then....

I played fretless back when I discovered Japan (still have one - and my Ironwood is fretless - yes it was a bad idea, but it's still fun). Mick's sound was a little over-processed back then, but I tended to play more with my feet, too. (I love the live album). I used a MuTronIII and Bi- Phase, Big Muff, Morley Wah and a Deluxe Memory Man that I made footswitches for so I could have the box at my fingertips and send the repeats into over-drive. Them were the days...

This is so true. Everything in the 80’s got a big dose of processing. Digits were on the rise so we sloshed them on everything. We have to forgive! I always wanted a backlash to follow, with dry-sounding mixes making their mark, not sure it did...

These days I find it hard to listen to some stuff that’s swimming in reverb, it’s a pity really...

So now that these seems to have devolved into a list of all Stick albums, you can find a pretty complete list at the following:

I have four recordings available that never made it to SE's list. All are at my Bandcamp now:

I'm sure there are many others too...

I'm sure so too.

I'm building up a list of stickists with some sort of web presence that now runs to over 60 entries[1]. Over half of the list have something on bandcamp.

[1] Not just a list of people, so not necessarily the same number of stickists, e.g. there are entries for Stick Men, King Crimson & CGT as well as for Tony Levin, Trey Gunn, Tom Griesgraber.

Awesome. Share it here on Stickist when ready.

Houston area Stickist Chuck Ivy did a similar site way back in the 1990s. I just found his old site (last update Jan 2005!). - http://stick.phui.com/

But Chuck's a list of any recording with Stick in the mix. Not exclusive to Stick soloist works.
