Thought I might put a period on the end of this post...
The bass side of my railboard finally died altogether about a month ago. When I took the pickup off to send it in for repair, I saw a little red wire that went between the bass side electronics and the TRS jack had pulled off. I resoldered it, and have not had the problem mentioned above yet! I think it's been that connection failing over the last year that's been causing the weirdness.
