Post Any good modern sticktones?
Hey guys,

I'm looking to get into sticking a little for a hobby. I'm a decent guitarist, so I figured the transition would be smooth. Are there any good videos or so of people playing with a tone that sounds like clean and modern? I'd like to find a setup where my bass really gets bassy at below a frequency and the melodic parts are superseparated from it. For example, I saw this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFTupf0Rj8U ... but I don't get the Point of sticking that since it's overdub. I'd rather play that on a guitar and bass, especially considering the price of the stick.

TIA,

My bandmate Tyler and I get some cool modern tones. Here's an older video of ours:

Forgive the old guy here, but what are the "highlights" of "Modern Tone"?

That video sounds okay, but I, and not bragging, can play much better and cleaner using bass and guitar. I think the tone is awful. A bit like the videos where guys go to Walmart and take a $10 guitar to show they can play slayer. Guess the stick sounds like a $10 guitar, except it adds a $10 bass to it, along with poor note choices. Any videos from here where guys rip the shit out of some metal and do crazy stuff you couldn't do with a bassist or guitarist? Or am I frontier?

Something that sounds like you're not showing off your right hand and left hand coordination at the same time, only for the sake of showing off, which I can do, but more showing it off because you don't have to put up with a crappy bass player degrading your guitarism. I've done a little bit of Chapman, mind you, but I can't come to terms with how poorly it sounds. With the video I posted, maybe it's not possible even, since the dude overdubbed the melody onto the bassline. If that's the case, I'll be fine with it and just look for a more competent bass-players. As for now, it's just I've not seen anything on the Chapman that blows me away.

Nothing I can't do better on a guitar, and with a 7-stringed guitar, it seems like I get more bass than what everyone gets on those stick-videos. What I'm looking for is the first person to let me know why stick is superior to bass and guitar ... I mean, it's a pretty chunky investment, and coordinating left hand and right hand, and brain separating bass from melody, is already there for me ... to put it bluntly, what's the highest level video out there on the stick? The best of the best. No "I can do this with left hand and this with right hand at the same time"-muffled-muzak. The best shit I could never do with a bass and a guitar. What is it?

Funny! You're never going to get a Stick player telling you that it's better than bass or guitar. Not sure why you're looking to stir the Pot and I don't even play Stick anymore. Freedom of choice is awesome, so you have the choice to not bother with Stick or any other tapping instrument. Just think of all the money you'll save.

Makes me wonder why you have an interest in the Chapman Stick since you seemingly hate everything about it?

But to attempt to answer seriously, the Stick has its own distinct sound. I long ago gave up trying to get it to sound like a guitar and bass player on one fret board. once you get past that, and accept it as its own voice, maybe you'll find a place for it?

Or perhaps a different tapping instrument is more to your liking? The NS stick for example is an 8 string 4ths tuning stereo instrument that allows both traditional and tap instrument techniques. Look up some of Don Schiffs playing in the Rocket Scientists for example. Or maybe the Warr Guitar, which is more like the Stick, but features Bartolini pickups?
