The tuning is called Full Baritone (I am pretty sure Emmett has signed off on that).

Gene - sorry to not get this - can you say if your Full Bari is actually the inner 10 strings of RMR12? Trying to understand.

Cheers!

That is exactly my tuning.

Bass side: up full step from standard tuning, lowest fretted note is D

Melody side: down a fourth from f# to c# on lowest melody string.

Thanks Gene. This helps! The fact that you played a new Grand Railboard in RMR12 and it was your tuning, is also confirmation.

I think one of the advantages of this tuning is greater hand separation, do you find that?

It's easy to talk this stuff into the ground. Play it. Fail. Pick it back up, play it upside down and then perhaps try a new one.

I certainly found this to be true. Also, you aren't truely comfortable with the instrument until you can re-string and re-tune it. Until you've done this a few times, you tend to put the instrument on a pedestal mentally, kind of holding at arms length, which keeps you from really embracing it. At least it was that way for me. Once I could re-string and re-tune, it became my instrument, rather than "that instrument I'm trying to learn to play."

you mentioned wanting to be able to transition to 7th and back to 5th. Remember, your left hand can help with this too. You can hit the 7th with the left hand while holding the 1,3 on the left, or, you can hit the 3rd on the left while playing 1,5 on the right, easily sliding down to 7th and back to 5th on the right.

Poly chords between the left and right hands are more versatile on the Stick than on a piano because there is overlap between sides. You can play the same note in more than one location, opening up opportunities for different transitions and fingerings... Something I'm still working on.

This is incredibly enjoyable reading... and also NOT helping stave off impatience for my Railboard ;)

Given the relevance to this thread, SE have also just posted a thread saying they've added Full Baritone as an official tuning on their website - http://www.stick.com/instruments/tunings/10/full_bari/

Congratulations Gene!

Literally read, "FAN BOY FISHES WISH!"

Tip of hat to SE, as usual, for providing simply the finest handmade / configured instrument on our planet.

Hey Andy,

I am least qualified to determine whether or not there is more distance between the left and right hand because I've always used this tuning. I know I really like this tuning having tried a few others.

What Armydoc said about higher registers in the left hand - well, that right there, succinctly stated I might add, is what I love about the Stick. That left hand gets to help out - some call it fingersticking, and it creates a beautiful overlap. This is especially apparent on 12 string Sticks.

Still another topic I am not entirely qualified to talk about lol.

Very cool thread to read, guys. You know I have to say this; both the railboard and my grand have accommodated every and any tuning I attempted with ease... but beyond that it's interesting to realize that Emmett was likely an influence on my playing long before I even knew who Emmett was, and what a Stick was... kind of cool.

I'm still waiting.

Just in case any of you were wondering.

*sigh*
