Fretless people..how do you?
Curious..how do handle those fretless or even half fretless chords? (I saw some sticks where only the 2 or 3 lowest strings are fretless) I mean, since technically you can’t put 2 or 3 fingers exactly at the same position Some notes will always be out of tune..

All about the ear training, having very, very good relative pitch is critical to good intonation, also playing with your ears as opposed to eyes/and ingrained feelings of where the fingers are supposed to go is a big part of it. I’ve had a few fretless guitars, I did alright with it - Ned Evett does some really cool stuff... Try violin or cello, it can be an interesting experience...

Not really what I meant. Technically..how can you put 2-3 fingers in the same position ?!

Chords are no problem Played my fretless bass for years in funk, rock synthy and metal bands. The main thing is, that your body and the instrument are not in static position - so some chords get possible. Also a fretless has lower string action. So you can easily play barre chords.

Re: Fretless people..how do you?
Can't read notes. But just basic major chords where you let the strings ring through

Re: Fretless people..how do you?
Yes, really no problem You have to create your own style to make this possible, because there is no book you can learn from. But chords on a fretless have a nice mood and sound. I love it.

Re: Fretless people..how do you?
I have a 5-string fretless bass I built besides my non-fretless Stick (which Mr. Chapman built). I would say, some chords are not as available on a fretless instrument, because the precision of finger position on the same fret isn't there if you are not using the same finger to hit two strings. By example, trying to hit the add9 (e.g. CGD) in the bass will probably be a bit out of tune.
The power of fretless, which you can see if you watch Steve's video, is in the attack, the slide and the expression. He chooses to use it to sounds somewhat like an upright, because jazz. I use my bass to growl in the low end and scream in the high end, because prog rock.
