Post subject:  String question: switching from DBM to MR

Hello All,

It's been years since I've posted on here and haven't really been active with the stick during that time, but I'm trying to get back into it.

I'd like to change my strings and switch back to MR tuning. I have a "new" unopened set of DBM strings from about 6 or 7 years ago.

1) Are these strings still good? Can they still be used? If they can still be used:
2) Can I just order a single 1st string, C, for MR tuning and use the top 4 of the DBM set to create the 5 melody strings for MR?
3) Or would I be better off getting a new set of MR strings?

Thanks in advance for your assistance!

I would say based just on the age that your best course of action is a fresh set of strings

Yes you can order just one string. For light gauge it's an .008, medium and .009 and heavy .010.

Just call Cambria at the shop and she will tell you what it costs and send it to you. best times to call are 10:30-6:00 M-F Pacific time. 818-884-2001

You'll need to reset the intonation and bridge heights as well. To do that, just copy the position on the lowest melody string from the one next to it, and proceed across the set. The 1st string will need to be slightly shorter than current and maybe a half-turn lower on the bridge screw. The nut will probably be fine.

Hope that helps.
