So, Im putting together a few sets to start playing solo gigs.....For those of us that aren't Bob Culbertson or Greg Howard or, shall I say, for us Stickists that are moving along comfortably on the instrument into the "Intermediate" range, whats some decent but EASY Stick self-accompany songs can you recommend that some of you do I use Matched Reciprocol tuning if that makes a difference Ones Im fairly proficient at the moment Star of the County Down (Thanks, Bob LOL) House of the Rising Sun Tears in Heaven Simple Twelve bar Blues things with simple solos and melodic parts (so, I can milk these for a few tunes) currently learning a version of Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" |

Clocks is three chords and so help me - people will stop whatever they are doing to watch you play those 3 chords over and over again. I have no equivalent for that one except that it's instantly recognizable and actually, really fun to play. Two others would include You look wonderful tonight by Clapton. It's G with a simple verse and chorus. You can have some fun with the bridge too. Last would be Norwegian Wood. Along with Somewhere over the Rainbow and Autumn Leaves, It's been played to death by Stickists, but it also a nice simple melody that's as fun to play as it is to listen to. I'm currently working through Sweet Love by Anita Baker and Hendrix's Wind cries Mary (and Invention 8). Best of luck with the effort - good job! |

My advice - try to play things other Stick players don't play. Americana folk tunes like Shenandoah and Ashokan Farewell lay real nice on Stick. |

thanks for all the suggestions so far.....not a bad one in the entire bunch!...... One of the things Im really enjoying about playing Stick over piano is that there are several instances of notes everywhere.....If I cant grab something on the melody side, I can often grab it on the bass-side with the other hand and incorporate that into the right-hand melody, often going back n forth many times through a whole song (like playing multi-dimensional piano)....for you vets, this is probably nothing new, but - for me - Im loving it |

It's easy to go down the easy listening/modern ballad road because the instrument lends itself so well to that when played solo (I've been there myself). There is so much other material that will adapt well and quickly, be entertaining and recognisable and will help you create your very own niche. Just my two cents. Tim |
