Hi guys,
Anyone have information on the Sticks that were made with guitar frets?

To start of: these where the first Sticks, production started in 1974, if I'm correct. The wood is pao ferro (Brazilian Ironwood). It can be retrofitted with a truss rod, if needed.

I had one of these for a couple of years and really regret letting it go. If the Stick is setup right
these instruments can be great. To make it that way you will probably need to have
a truss rod installed like jaap said but it would be worth it. There are earlier sticks that had a
neck width that was a little thinner so I am guessing that widening the neck was one of
the first improvements. Guitar frets are not as good for tapping as Rods or Rails
but that being said once you get used to it or if you have never known the difference in the first place this Stick would be an ideal first instrument. Also it would probably be recommended
by the chief to keep the tuning in 'Classic' or 'Matched Reciprocal'.

Good luck, these days those instruments are a real find 8-).

I have one. #1212. I believe it is jumbo bass fret wire. When I sent it back to S.E. in '07 I had a complete re-work because it had been sitting in it's case in a cellar and various places. Emmett put in an adjustable truss rod, new p.u., and did your tippicale fret-work that is usually required by a fretted instrument. A couple/few had worked their way out/leveling, etc. I made the bone-head move to make it frettless by my luthier after I got a Grand Stick, gonna have him put them back in. I saved a fret-wire so he can match it. Funny thing is he is gonna charge me less to re-fret it than to make it fretless. The neck had to be shaved once the frets were out 'cause the board was uneven. As far as fret wire vs. rods or rails, it has a different sound but is as easy to play.

Don't put anything heavier than light strings on this instrument.

My very first Stick #566 has these frets. I had it refurbished in2003 and Emmett installed a truss rod. It means I could put light strings on the bass side and mediums on the melody side. These guitar frets are less forgiving than jumbos or rails but this oldtimer plays great. Practice on guitar frets then fly on rails ;-)
