Post Stick Camp Canada 2018
Another year, another fantastic Stick event put on by Jim Meyer.

Stick Camp Canada, the 2018 incarnation, wrapped up this past Sunday evening/Monday morning. This time around it was held on Gabriola Island, which is off the coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia. Gabriola has beautiful Pacific Northwest scenery and a rural, laid back feel. Nice. The group stayed at a small resort called The Haven.

There were 22 musicians in attendance. Some of the familiar names included Jim, Bob Culbertson, and Japhlet Attias. Adding an intercontinental element to the event were Dirseus Hache from Argentina, and Jacky (Stick) and Anaka (vocals), a jazz duo who made the trip from France.

This year's event ran for a day longer than the two previous Vancouver events I'd attended, and there was more of a performance focus than usual. Days held loosely scheduled gatherings with free time mixed in, and evenings were Stick Night events at a local bar and grill called The Surf Lodge, which provided Stickists of all skill levels the opportunity to perform.

There is too much to describe, but here are some things that stood out to me personally...any of these (and more that I'm not mentioning) actually deserves multiple paragraphs to convey their awesomeness, but I'll be brief to keep this readable in one session:

- The playing every evening at the Surf Lodge was really enjoyable. It was great fun to see the musical variety put on the stage by so many Stickists. The crowd was supportive. Those of us who don't have much experience playing out got some tangible opportunities to build on.
- Some of the Stick Night "headliners" every night were Jim, Japhlet, and Jacky and Anaka. Local Stick/guitar/drum trio Alan Blackwaters and the Radnecks played Saturday night, also. Great stuff all around.
- Jacky and Anaka were new to most (all?) of us. I'm not sure how that is...they are really good. Jacky does a great job on Stick, both as accompanist and soloist, and Anaka has a beautiful voice. Great chemistry.
- Oh yeah, almost forgot...some guy named Bob played a set or two every night.
- Dirseus isn't fluent in English, but his participation was active. He was one of a small group that ventured to the weekly jam night the Surf Lodge hosts. Noisy atmosphere. Dirseus played a few songs, and it wasn't long before the bar went silent as everyone stopped their conversations to pay attention to him, then gave him a standing ovation.
- Semi-formal sessions included Jim covering some pedal board concepts, a music theory session by Rob Gellner, and one by Dirseus on 7th chord application. There were also some aimed at the beginners in the group, and Bob put on a Master Class.
- It's such a neat thing to be able to hang with folks that speak the language of this instrument, learn how they approach it, and to play for each other. The joy of sharing musical moments, intrinsic learning, sharing ideas, what have you...this for me is the single best element of these events.
- Japhlet and Bob pulled together groups to do some spontaneous composition for performance ensembles that played on the final Stick Night.
- Skyping with Emmett is always a highlight. Hearing his ideas and playing, learning about his approaches, and enjoying his sense of humor adds a great element to the week.

Good times. A thousand thanks to Jim for his tireless efforts before and during this event, planning and pulling it together, helping folks arrange travel, and always going out of his way to help everyone enjoy and benefit from it.

Jim, you rock, both musically and as an all around great guy!

I really wanted to come this year but several independent events conspired against me. Sounds like a great time!! Jim is a real master and always puts on a top notch event. Plus you can't beat the surroundings in that part of the world.

Looking forward to more reports and photos.

P.S. The photo of Jacky and Anaka on the water is spectacular.

Thanks for the post.

Gabriola is an amazing place. I was able to attend the 2011 gathering there hosted by Jim. Good times. Great to see those photos!

Stick Camp was amazing! A beautiful setting, great people, great music, and perfect weather. I also didn’t want to go home. There were even orcas waving goodbye as we waited for the ferry off the island!

Sooo much amazing music…

Jim - thank you so much for putting this together!

Jim does it right. Really enjoying the stories from the event, let's hear more? What was for breakfast? Was there frisbee? Any good Stickist jokes?
