Post subject:  Your opinion needed-Joining a band

well here's the deal:

a local band is looking for a bass player to replace the old one who left.
with this rehearsal video clip which immediatlly blew me away..:

i kindly asked whether they consider taking a chapman stick player instead of bass player-so the band leader told me they may be interesting and send me the above song along with two others:

this one also sounds interesting-so i was practicing those two songs -found it quite intersting giving a little extra with the stick (sometimes using the melody side with the Boss SY-300 to give it a little synth sound)

well the 3rd song(and here's the big IF)..didn't quite got me-and found it less interesting:

also keeping in mind i am not that pro in stick playing-although owning it for about 15 years- my stick experience is mostly after the Mallorca stick camp which was about 1 1/2 years ago

so i don't feel 100% with my playing level and ALL the material.
need to give them answer soon whether i'm even going to audition for the part-don't want to waste their time and money (rehearsal room costs money..)

one thing i was considering -is the "in between" solution - suggesting to be as guest musician in some songs-if that's ok with them off course.

what's your opinion on that?
what would you do?

cheers

Boaz

Seriously, the music is fine, and the bass parts seem to be easily feasible on the Stick, and don't require a lot of technique if I listened well; So you should be able to take those bass duties on Stick!

It will not be easy with two gibson players in a band but i think its possible with this style. For the slower song try light distortion and reverb.
Good luck

I rehearsed w/ a hardrock/metal guitarist and drummer for about a month lotsa repeated notes and octaves to cut thru they kept asking me to bring my bass. I wasn't really satisfied w/ how my Stick w PASV-4 was cutting it and we parted ways for "artistic differences" before I ever brought my bass. I now also have a ACTV-2 mebe that would cut thru better. It really boils down to if you get along personality-wise anything can work if the effort is made. Try It! WTF...Good Luck!

Well the band's guy asked me if I also have a bass.
I said yes, so he told me I can play bass on some songs
I said I own a bass but I am not a bass player :)

I've mainly only been in bands with the Stick. I love it, and half the fun is the challenge of finding out how it fits in each particular group. One group I play in now, I use it primarily as bass, and then when the arrangement calls for it I'll throw in some treble side. It works perfectly and I love my roll with this group.

However, there is a very real possibility that you will threaten the ego of some of the players in the group. I've found it takes a very open minded guitarist to be cool with the Stick, and even then sometimes you have to repeatedly show them that you're not trying to just take their role over.

That being said, fucking go for it! Obviously I'm biased but I think the Stick is a fantastic band instrument.

I would take bass and the Stick. Find a tune where the Stick Bass parts really shine and cut through.... I would use both as part of a tonal palette that you bring to the scene... Does not have to be either or.

Certainly you don't want to be influenced by one tune that doesn't really get your motor running. In a band there will always be tunes you like better than others. The question is do you like these guys personally and do you like what they're about musically?

Like other folks have already said, playing Stick in a band can be amazing provided that everyone is on board with it. Personally, unless you're really pounding or doing a lot of snappin and poppin, I find there's virtually nothing I can't do bass-wise on my Stick. So these days the only time I'll reach for a bass is when I want the sound of a fretless.

With that said ... yeah there are two others guitars going right now. So my suggestion would be to start with focusing on bass parts but on your Stick. Don't even bring a bass. If that's a problem for them, they might not be your guys.

One thing I had to learn early on (I was already playing in a band when I got my first Stick) was that just because you can do all this cool two-handed stuff on an instrument with the range of a piano, that doesn't mean you have to. It's ok to focus on bass. You can do two handed things a regular bass player can't do. It's even ok sometimes just to let your right hand hang there and do simple bass parts with your left hand. Whatever services the tunes. If you guys all get along and you're enjoying it, you can start expanding and before you know it, your Stick will become an integral part of the group.

Do you like the other people in the band? Do you generally like the music?
I would only join the band if I could say yes to these two questions (unless there's a whole lot of money to be made).
But if you can, then go for it! With the Stick! (who needs a bass?)
Have fun! Playing the Stick in a band is even better than playing it alone.
