Post Stickland/Bassland
My girlfriend was over for the snowstorm and she wanted to sing along to YouTube. Her preferences are Broadway and Disney. (ex. Phantom, Frozen) And Rob Zombie... But anyway, I was trying to follow along on bass guitar. Now, I dig playing B'way stuff, it reminds me of the pit band in local theater. Trying to anticipate song structure, chord movement, and the always present key changes. But what was blowing me away was how much the dot markers were throwing me off! I couldn't shift up a fourth or fifth on the same string as I do on Stick. And when I was anticipating chord movement I was thinking backwards and inverse. I was thinking of my bass as an INVERTED FOURTHS TUNING. Wow. Just my musings. I guess that fifths-in-bass thing is starting to STICK.

I just re-read my post and corrected it. I meant INVERTED FOURTHS TUNING. Goodness gracious the nomenclature can get so confusing. as long as I know what I'm talkin' about. Anyway, UPSIDE DOWN AND BACKWARDS BASS IS WHAT I WAS PLAYING ALL MY LIFE.

HA HA know what you mean.i was brought up on a poor side of town where instruments were far and few let alone get your hands on one. A chum of mine had a guitar everyone took turns trying to get their hands on it and express what they could do.when i clenched the opportunity i picked it up left handed and played. the young boys yelled.. its upside down, and it stayed upside down for over 50 yrs.Hope your serenade was successful. :D Larry.

Post Re: Stickland/Bassland
I guess guys like Jimmy Haslip who played bass guitar upside-down throughout their career would have no issue with Stick but, for me, its a HUGE learning curve.....actually, many patterns are identical, like modes ( Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, pentatonics, etc)...the problem is where the notes fall within the patterns I know from bass dont work to do perfect ascending/descending runs...and the inversions of them, especially with popular basslines, even a simple 12-bar blues walking bassline -- which I can do in my sleep on bass guitar - I have to put a little thought in for Stick.

Also, Im a very competent slap bass player, and Im trying to add the technique to stick and thats proving to be a real challenge :?
