I have (and play) a 12 string bamboo. My second Stick will be a gold plazma 12 string Railboard. When the plazma 10 string came out in March - I ordered one up - but quickly changed my order with Cambria to the 12 string when the discussion erupted and it was said "I hear you . . ." .
I don't know if there is a formal list. By the time you add development time then actual beginning of production - then standing in line :) - then production of your instrument - it is gonna be a while - in the meantime you could be practicing/learning on your alternate preference. I am in my sixth decade walking on the planet also and see a lot of good music on the current 10 string and the 12 sting wood / bamboo versions. I can wait cause I already have a really good instrument - can you wait ?

Hi Alberto,

I was in a similar situation when the current Railboard was in development. It had been announced right around the time I decided I wanted a Stick of some sort. Me being me, that was what I wanted. SE wasn't providing release dates, though, which made perfect sense to me (I'm an R&D engineer in product development- I get it). Rather than endure an uncertain wait, I chose to get a 10 string bamboo instrument as soon as I could.

If I'd have waited for the new product, it would have been another 1.5-2 years. Truth be told, I'm happy with how things worked out. If I had to replace my Stick, I'd opt for another bamboo (or wood) instrument. It's possible I could change my mind someday (the lower action a Railboard could bring is tempting), but for now I like where I'm at.

If you hear directly from SE that you can get a Grand Railboard soon, then perhaps your decision becomes easy. I'd never try to talk anyone out of one- that would just be dumb because they're awesome. But don't make the mistake of thinking that a new (or used, especially coming from SE) bamboo or wood instrument would somehow be a compromise, because there are reasons SE still makes them. They're lighter, have more pickup options, the frets stand out better, they're beautiful, they play awesome, and we all know that amazing music has been made on them for decades.

Good luck, whatever you decide!

Thanks to all who responded to my post! Two factors stand out to me: I really don't think I want to wait too much longer as when one is 65 one thinks about the shorter time they have on this earth to create music, and the fact I live in Costa Rica and not in U.S. or Europe so its not like I can just go receive something from the UPS man.

So I have decided to opt for a Bamboo Grand if I don't hear release news of a 12 string Railboard by August 26 (my birthday and the Stick's birthday).

Happy Tapping
(And pray I will save some funds for Skype lessons)

I'm very happy with my bamboo 12 Grand! This hybrid wood ages with musicality, sounding better for every year. And it's not too heavy. Almost the same weight as my Wenge SG12.

If I can ever afford it I would love a 12-str RailBoard though. And I would really like it with a 32" scale rather than 34"! :-)

Can we dream about an SG-12 Railboard? The shorter scale will help with the extra weight of aluminum board a lot.
(Oh, and if one can dream, let's make it headless for even more travel-friendliness).
