I'd go for the FT. I guess the FTC is a newer type, didn't know that one yet...
The FT is already very bright, I'm afraid more highs would be too much on the Stick.

If you look on the specs for both pickups
http://www.emgpickups.com/media/product ... 0172re.pdf
It shows the FT has a resonant frequency of 4.85 Khz and the FTC is 530 Khz. So basically the FTC will be brighter.

Other than that I guess you could look up the difference in Alnico and Ceramic pickups.

One more thing. Make sure you have room for the pickups under the strings. My Sticks are from before there were multiple pickup choices and the depth of my pickup channel is less than the depth of many pickups. The new Stick may have a deeper channel. I don't know.

Great info, thanks.

Does the EMG use pole pieces or a bar? I'm hoping it isn't concerned with precise string placement over the pickup (that is, I can turn the pickup to 45 degrees and it will still work fine?)

Woohoo! Very excited. Just been reading about the 18v mod for the EMG's. Definitely going to try that one - seems quite easy. Any experiences?

I prefer the active sound but the passive feel.
Kind of my taste as well! :-) I try to achieve such a tone by playing the PASV4 neck PUPs with filters set to the thinnest sound. Even by Jaap´s excellent mp3 round-trip I'm finding my ears mostly drawn to the PAV4 neck, but as said, I'l like it a little thinner with a bit of "EMG sparkle" but still creamy. ANd I always cut a little low bass out of the melody side output to make the Stick blend better as one instrument (rather than sounding like a bass plus a baritone guitar).

I also own a Stickup, that I sometimes pop in on a Grand or SG12 for recordings, but as I perform live so often I mostly keep the PASV4s on my sticks to allow me to swap around tone alterations while playing. There's nothing like adding a distortions stompbox on one side while setting that same side to dual PUPs out-of-phase; it's a melodically screaming tone that works very well at a gig. Nice color together with a volume/swell pedal on just that side's output.

In general, for EMG, if you can't see pole pieces on the pickup, then it has a bar inside. To be sure, just look at the specs. EMG has all of their information available on line including line drawings with dimensions of the pickup on the outside and inside. They also list maximum string spacing (based on the magnetic field) so you know how close to the edge you can get.

Per, you're right, the PU's out of phase give a very nice distortion sound. It made Brian May fanous... the Bohemian Rapsody solo was played with the middle and front pickup of his Red Special out of phase :-)

And I'm 99% sure that the FT's use a bar magnet.

Right, so I think I have my plan... 2x 9v batteries for the 18v experience and 4x EMG FTs to do the out-of-phase thing! Plus some metal plate with holes drilled, in place of the Block...

Your best chance might be on the EMG site, they have a webshop. It was almost impossible to get the FT's here in Europe...

Well, so far I've got 2 second-hand from eBay, so just 2 more to find. The EMG webshop+shipping makes for an expensive proposition!

I'm enjoying this post keep the suggestions coming. I have an Ironwood w/ Stickup, but my 12-string Grand came w/ a PASV-4 and I now have a ACTV-2 that I go back and forth with. I've thought about shoving all kinds of stuff in the Grand. I even stuck the Stickup in there...the pole pieces don't line up but it sorta works...hahaha
