Post How the pickups sound... (reprise)
Hi guys,

I haven't seen this re-posted in a while, so I thought I would share it for any recent members.

If you want a quick audio comparison of Stick pickups to audition in your headphones, I found this post by Jaap to be really helpful:

viewtopic.php?p=37489&sid=62a368c707cfae70fc0ada7ceda20930#p37489

Note these MP3s don't cover the Railboard's R-Block, which is a variant on the PASV-4 (with the option to be active).

If you want Greg's comprehensive video review of these pickups, it's here:

Ah, this is fun to hear back myself :-)
I still like the fact that the 3 modules are so very different: the archetype Stickup tone, the sparkle of the ACTV-2 and the more electric tone of the PASV-4.
I tend to use the Stickup and ACTV most of the time, but I was experimenting with the PASV last week, and I was struck by the low end of the bass strings. Very nice if you're in the bassist role.

Thanks for this... I've only played stickup
and prefer this sound in your MP3 samples.

#404 will be 40 years old next year and it still sounds great.

I wonder - is it possible to get a "blank" ACTV housing to allow user experiments with EMG placement? ...

Not that I know of. I've made several housings myself from wood, and long ago the toolshop of the company I work needed something to practice their CAM skills on, and they made me a PASV-4 housing from POM, with different pickup placement.
My EMG-housing can be seen and heard here:
https://youtu.be/QgRFYw5A6fs
I have 2 EMG's on the bass side, to get a more puchy, rounder sound, similar to a Jazz Bass vs. Precision Bass. The pickups are approximately on the same spot as coils of a the Stickup.
Before that, I had one EMG on the bass side, but more angled than the ACTV-2 module, see
https://youtu.be/lNrrnaP6Ia4
This gave the lowest bass strings a more focussed sound.

Jaap, thanks for sharing these, they are excellent.

The ACTV2 really does have a special crystalline sound (but not cold).

I had a similar idea to your second vid, that is to slope the bass side more acutely to emphasise the growl of the lowest strings.

It occurs to me that the same could be done to the melody side, which would mean the b&m pickups were organised in an offset V arrangement (if that makes sense).

It would be great to build a Block that allowed experimenting with pickup position just by turning a screw driver!
