Thats odd. Looks like someone has ruined his own instrument. I would not but that poor instrument....

Maybe a special request from this guy. Only Emmett can answer that. It's a bit logic. I was looking closely and it seems to me that there is 5 strings for the bass part and 6 strings for the "guitar" part.

Looks to me like someone took an older model 10 string and added an extra tuner peg. Notice there are only 10 bridge and nut posts, but there are two extra little holes near the treble side of the bridge posts where other posts could have been added. I'd put this in the category of "failed experiment". Then again, whoever got it for $823 didn't do too bad in securing a older 10 string.

My 2 cents...

I saw this when it went up..

The only thing i would guess is that they were trying to do a doubled string at some point - Doesn't something else (zither) have something like that..?

I hope Emmett chimes in because looking at the tuners and the spacing cuts for the bridge, it doesn't look 'modified' by some hack for sure.

I may have supplied the owner with the extra Schaller tuner. If I had done the retrofit, I would have first rasped and sanded down the serial number and hammered it in at a different location. Then I would have used a counterbore at the new outer tuner hole to make the sanded down surface flat again for the collar nut and washer.

No idea why the owner wanted 11 strings. Yes, it could have been for a companion to the highest melody string, maybe for volume's sake. Then again, maybe he knew about my "wild string" on my 9-string guitar just before my two handed tapping discovery. But that companion high string was attached at the brass ball end to gear shift type, elbow operated lever.

Wish I could have snagged that. That would have been an easy repair for me. Cut out the screwed up bridge section and replace that with a much sturdier and more modern carbon fiber bridge build to match the layout of the original. I'd obviously remove the 11th tuning machine as well. Still looked like the instrument itself was in decent shape.
