Post Rig set up.
Hi all,

So I just got a stick a month ago and I'm trying to work out what is the best way to play a stick. I've tried a guitar amp and bass amp but I'm sure that there is something more feasible and easiest than having both. Could anyone help in making me any recommendations on what the best way is? Obviously its subjective but I'd rather have a solution to only playing the bass side of the instrument. I'd rather have the opportunity to play the melody part. Currently just running the bass side through an Ampeg SVT.

Thanks!

I like to get all the processing (effects and amp/cab sims) on my pedalboard and send out to a PA. I have a PA speaker at home and also play through my studio monitors.

I know that this amp in the classifieds is an amazing amp that can handle everything. http://www.stickist.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11486
I'm tempted to get it myself...

Check out the Center Point Stereo Spacestation v.3 (http://aspenpittmandesigns.com/spacestation-v3/). This is a stereo speaker system that works very well with the Stick if you use stereo processing and a subwoofer (your Ampeg may suffice).

There is NO right way or best way.... Check out what Jeremy said.... The Stick is a full range instrument and can benefit from a full range system. I am going into a Line 6 Helix into 2 QSC K12 powered monitors and for bigger gigs I throw in the K-sub! Very Very nice sound. Greg Howard opts for a Fender Twin and a SWR 400 bass amp into a Bag End 15... Also a great choice. What sounds good to your ear? what is your application. how much $$ do you want to spend? Best of luck to you

Yeah, Randy has a good point. It's really subjective so perhaps the best way to get started is to find out what other people are using and WHY they are using it. For now, you have a solid, dependable amp so you are golden. You've got your role all figured out (bass with some melodic accompaniment), also very good to know.

I run a stereo rig with a single QSC K12 and a Behringer k900fx. On the chance that I am playing a smaller venue, I opt for the K900fx straight up as it has built in reverb that can be adjusted on each channel. The EQ (kinda crappy, but still functional) is for ALL channels, but it all works out. I really like having options, but I do expect I will invest in a second K12 and possibly some sort of sub, but this is all conjecture as of right now :D

Have fun, learn lots, repeatedly (not voluntarily) fail and make yourself more awesome in the process - that is my current motto.

Your budget is really the rate limiting step. Without knowing that, it's hard to make a recommendation.

For learning, I'm running mine into a Crate amp 160DG that I got used. It has inputs and eq for both Bass and Melody inputs, and I think sound pretty good. I got it used for ~$300. For a little less than double that, I could have got a Fishman Loudbox artist which I'm told is a little better. For about $750-800 the Fishman Loudbox Performer I think is what Rob Martino is using... If it's good enough for him, it's probably better than I'll ever need.

Really depends on what you can afford, want and feel you need.

I like pedal steel amps because steel has the same range as a Stick and so the amps are usually medium size open back combo style with a stout full range 15" speaker about 200 watts solid state with a lot of EQ and 2 EFX loops. Plus I already have a few of those. You still need a small minimal mixer to get both sides of the Stick into the amp. Its a great punchy rig if you play piano style (pretty much same sound on both sides played as one big instrument) with minimal EFX like maybe a compressor and a high end reverb like the Big Sky. If you're playing a rock & roll gig with a drummer and are gonna replace a bass player and a guitar player with 2 completely different sounds you need 2 appropriate rigs or maybe a stereo EFX unit w/2 discrete EFX chains thru 2 powered closed back speakers. A lot of guys do that.

The single point stereo thingy and a powered subwoofer is something I'm gonna try because Aspen's shop is a few blocks from my house and I know him pretty well. I already got the powered sub so I'm halfway there. I got a feeling I'm gonna love Aspen's gadget but just haven't had the spare $750 to go thru with that once I try it.

I have a Fishman Loudbox acoustic amp that works great. Marshall has a good acoustic amp as well.

I run the bass side through a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver that I heard about on these forums. Basically turns that acoustic amp into a bass amp. Can't say how much this improved the bass sounds coming from the stick.

I run the melody side through a Line 6 Firehawk. Multieffects units are a cheap way to get a lot of sounds. I may slowly move to a more analog setup.

Rob Martino's SG12 has a significantly different range than your Grand Stick, and identical notes will sound different due to your longer scale length. It is infinitely better to serve your own needs than to judge yourself according to someone else's attempts to serve their needs—true for music and life in general.

Rob doesn't play an SG12, he plays a Grand as ArmyDoc said.
