Post stick made of satine (bloodwood)
Hello
I have a stick made of bloodwood/satine.
I bought it used and it seems, that it was not oiled for some years.
Quote:
the color of satine should be:"bright red in color that will oxidize over time to a reddish brown unless finished with a UV inhibiter"
(http://www.hearnehardwoods.com/hardwood ... wood.html#)

and the fret bord gets brown - the backside is beautiful red

Any ideas which oil i should use? danish? Works danish oil as an UV inhibiter?

PS I´m in Europe - so sending to SE is not an option
Any suggestions are welcome
Thanx
Gerald

I am not the expert wood-worker, but I did some poking around the forums of the experts. I saw clear Spar Varnish come up quite a bit. The Danish Oil did not seem to prevent UV damage at all. Maybe you can get an expert to chime in.

Organic coconut oil! Works great, cheap and smells good, too. Let it soak in overnight and then just rub and polish. Easy.

This was a good hint. I searched in some carpenter forums and it seems, that bloodwood needs a special treatment.

"blood wood has a natural oil , and other oil can soften the natural oil and intermix, creating a nasty mess"

Ups..... happy now, that I asked, before doing it (this happens not that often  )

But i didn´t found a solution to this (but I know now, what i shouldn´t do).

It seems that Stick Enterprise produced just a handful of Sticks from this beautiful wood.
so : any stick players out there, who have experience with bloodwood (aka satine) ?
Gerald

Please, don't do this, food grade oil will go rancid.

Short of applying a UV inhibitor film finish, there's not much you can do to completely avoid it. It's just something that will happen with time. It doesn't hurt the instrument.

But if you really want to slow it down from progressing, put it in the case when it's not being played.

I've been a serious woodworker for over 50 years. It doesn't matter what you do to wood, eventually it all turns brown. It's mostly UV that does it but hand oils and dirt can speed up the process. The original finish on wood Sticks in Watco Danish Oil Natural. I wouldn't put anything else on it. Just enjoy the petina, it means it was well used.
