Post Royalties and performing covers...
So, while I was enjoying some awesom covers by David Tipton and other different artists, it occurred to me that I have no clue about how royalties work.

For those of you who perform, can you shed some insight?

Do you have to pay a royalty to the original composer if you play a cover at a club? What about on you tube? I assume you would if you made a CD, but how much?

Thanks.

Great question, I know that organizations like ASCAP or BMI are supposed to collect royalties for you if your music is registered with them. My CD was registered with BMI and I know some of my music was on internet radio back when it came out but I've never seen any royalties so good question. But I do get a few pennies each time a tune is sampled on Amazon, iTunes or CDBaby etc..

So for the "touring" musician playing larger venues that do a cover or two I'm sure there has got to be some licensing going on with the agencies. I wonder if the clubbing musicians ever get hit for licensing? Steve Adelson, you could probably answer this best with all your experience!

Club/venues themselves cover licensing, not performers directly (maybe indirectly from their pay!).

Recording songs of another artist: you should pay a 'mechanical licensing' fee for each cover song. Most of the fees are usually around $50 per song if you are pressing 500-1000 CDs, or downloads, etc. There's a generic website somewhere for this. But when covering a smaller artist (ie: not the Rolling Stones), then I think it's better to go to that artist directly. Money straight into their pocket. And the smaller, easy-to-reach artists are always fair about the fee.

Just adding some more info on this matter:
At bigger gigs you are given a form to list the titles you are playing and in case other composers are covered they are duly compensated through their PRO (Performance Rights Organisation). I have personally only played my own composition at such bigger gigs, so I have no further details on playing covers. It works the other way around too; when someone plays one of your compositions at a gig of his/hers you will receive performance compensation through your PRO.

As a performing artist you don't have to pay for performing covers. The money, that goes out to compensate composers, comes from a large collaboration between PROs and venues, where venues typically pay a regular fee for offering live music, or recorded music in public.
