Post Re: what do you do for a living beside chapman stick
Hey Lion...
Fed up?......dude I feel your pain bro', and can see why you left the biz......it's a dirty world, with a constant race to the bottom.
If I had a chance to do it all over again, I would have been a plumber.
As good as my gig is, fatigue is a major problem. In an effort to be low cost, airlines push the brunt of these cuts on flight crew......I could bitch about this all day, but I'd be preaching to the choir.....

Example....today wake up at 2:45 am, shuttle to Brandon airport, showtime 4:15, depart 5:15 to Toronto, 2 hour sit, then Fort Lauderdale then back to Toronto.....13.5 hours duty, an hour to get in my truck after we land,,,,,another hour drive home, arrive at 8 pm......awake for the better part of a day.......now too wired to go to sleep.....yawn.

Yep, I see why you got out.......

Cheers,
Red Eye

Pilots never ask why I left, they already know.
But the problem I have now is I got no ambition left. I've had my commercial ticket since 1984 and worked dozens of 135 jobs, never earning a decent wage until I finally made Captain at Mesa. Then 9/11 happened and the whole biz went down the crapper. Now I'm old and struggle to pass a second class physical. I've got a standing offer to teach King Air at a local flight school in full motion sims, but to be honest I've always HATED sims. So instead I fly the tow-plane at our local glider club. Best job I've ever had, shame it don't pay much.

So many pilots' posts in this thread revive my old dreams to get a PPL, and also perhaps to learn to soar in a glider... Not in this country though :?

very cool!
question how does one learn to do minor utility (I suppose...eh, funny coincidence...STICK) welding.

It would be very convenient for me to be able to do some basic welding in the same way a home workworker could make 2x4 and plywood furniture

ain't it theway.I LOVE teaching diving, and a dive instructor can make hundreds of dollars a year HUNDREDS I say! :D

SO I mix it with science diving, some zoo work (glorified window cleaning) though TBH that's also enjoyable. I think a mix helps

I spend about 3 not-so-glorious months at an architecture firm when I was looking for a new path. and veteran architects told me "get out while you can!"

Wanna learn to weld? Mig and tig is the way to go... Sheet metal or a fab shop is a good place to start, maybe get a part time job as a welder's helper...

But here in Grande Prairie Alberta, farmers stick weld, and you learn by welding scrap into semi useable things. Make a lot of mistakes, and just do it a lot. (Poracity is an issue...lol)

Have fun!

Kev,
I've been welding since I was a kid. I own ten different machines.
The latest machine uses water as a fuel. Yep, I didn't believe it either.

Each type of machine has it's advantages and dis-advantages.
If you learn oxy-acetylene first, then Tig is an easy transition.
Anyway, next time you are in YYC, I'll show you a bit about welding.

These welders are reliable and affordable for starting out.

My SA-200 pipeline welder runs very clean on propane.
It has an inline Continental engine with a magneto.
I can hand crank start it, if the starter or battery fail.
I also have a 'SuitCase' X-Treme Mig wire feeder for it.

Scott, we have this place in Calgary, Alberta. It's a pretty cool place to tour. Nice projects!
This place started with a few guys who had a vision. http://heavyworld.com/
and they decided to start a business. http://heavyindustries.ca/customfabricationprojects/

I am retired and living in Costa Rica. The cost of living in the U.S. is such that I cannot support anything more there but a bare survival regimen. Love the 'pura vida' life here and am hoping to enliven it with a Stick purchase next year. :D
