Chapman Stick® FAQ
1) What is that ?
- This is a tapping musical instrument called The Chapman stick ® .

2) where does it come from ? India ?

- It was invented by Emmett Chapman from USA in 1969, first went commercially in 1974.
3) How many string does it have ?
- The "standard" is 10 strings, but there are also the Grand stick ® with 12 strings and Stick Bass ® with 8 strings.

4) What does it sounds like ?
-Kind of like electric guitar and Bass played together

5) how do you play it?
-Mainly by Tapping, but it involves technique from guitar, Bass guitar slapping, Piano coordination and Drums rhythmic technique.
6) Did I ever heard it on a song ?
-Perhaps the most famous song is "Shock The Monkey" by Peter Gabriel. Tony Levin plays The Chapman Stick® on this song.
Tony Levin is also the Bass guitar & Chapman Stick® player in the band king Crimson.
He also played as guest stick® player on Pink Floyd's "A Momentary Lapse Of Reason" album.
Dream Theater's Bass player John Myung also plays The chapman stick ®on their album "Falling Into Infinity".

7) Where else can I hear this instrument ?
- check out those strictly Chapman stick® players :
Emmett Chapman
Bob Culbertson
Greg Howard
Guillermo Cides
Steve Adelson
Michael Kollwitz
…plus many more

8) How can I learn to play this instrument ?
- By yourself with the few books and DVDs out there by Emmett Chapman, Greg Howard, Bob Culbertson, Steve Adelson.
-Skype lessons
- Stick® Seminars around the world

9) Where can I buy it ?
- Two options : buy a second hand instrument from other players or sites like eBay, or order a new one from Stick Enterprises®: www.stick.com
10) price ?
- standard 10 string is $2500 (November 2015)
other models range from $2100 to $2800
price include : Deluxe 15' CBI stereo cord , Stick strap, setup tools
price does not include :
modifications like pickup upgrade, Midi pickup and module and installation.
*also price does not include shipping BUT Stick Enterprises® give you $150 INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING CREDIT on shipping when ordering a new Chapman Stick® – you need to pay the additional difference shipping charge if there is any.
**also you need to pay custom charge - depends on your country
***other accessories to consider :hard/soft case, extra strings, extra cable.

11) Can I use my guitar pedal , multi effects, wireless system for the Chapman Stick®?
- Yes you can But since The Chapman stick® has 2 channels (the bass strings goes out to one channel and the melody strings goes out to the other channel) you will need everything doubled : 2 multi effects, 2 pedals chains, 2 wireless, 2 MIDI pickups and 2 MIDI modules.
*regular MIDI pickups are not compatible since the guitar strings spacing and Chapman stick® spacing are different – special order and installation from Stick Enterprises® are required if you want MIDI on one or both channels.

12) How do you tune The Stick®?
"Standard tuning" for 10-String Classic™ is :

Melody
1. D
2. A down a 4th
3. E down a 4th
4. B down a 4th
5. F# down a 4th
Bass
6. C
7. G up a 5th
8. D up a 5th
9. A up a 5th
10. E up a 5th (unison with 3rd string)
*There are other tunings like Matched Reciprocal™ , Baritone Melody™ and other tunings, but in general they all keep the " down a 4th" on the Melody side and up a 5th on the Bass side.

Tnx Gene
I was thinking about this for a while
And las FHF inspired me to do so, after throwing out the question
"How do you describe the stick to other people ?"

11) I've noticed that a lot of Stick players on YouTube are living in their Moms basement.....why is that?

That allows us to really concentrate on practice and not get hung up on trivial things like having a job, starting relationships with people, or having to deal with the outside world....

cheers,
k

There are nuances to point #10. Some Sticks can be run in mono, or the signals can be summed prior to FX units.

I think a lot of people, especially non-musicians, might feel a sense of "sticker shock" when they hear how much a Stick costs.
I think a good thing to mention in the price category is comparison to other instruments of high quality. Have you guys checked what a top notch trumpet goes for these days? Me neither, but I'd guess it's a lot more than a 10 string.

Kevin-c win.

Showering destroys 2.3% of my day when I could be learning how to more effectively pilfer David Tipton arrangements.

A decent guitar can be expensive too.
My PRS Custom 24 was listed for $3500
I walked away with it for $2700 (including some extra goodies)

A little correction to #6: Tony Levin played bass on the whole "Momentary lapse of reason", and tstick only on the track "one slip", he's not just appearing on one song.
BTW, his playing on that album is great!
