The boys selling the djebe's in Ubud market here in Bali can really get a great sound even if they don't know that much else. I know all the rudiments, single stroke, double stroke, flam, flam tap, triplets, paradiddle, double paradiddle etc...and I can't make a single decent stroke to save my life. I sound like shit.
