LESSON VIDEO: Walking the Line - soloing on a single string
Hi everyone,
I've been teaching this concept a lot lately and thought I'd create a reference for it.
As always, any comments or feedback are greatly appreciated.
enjoy!

although I am a proponent of 4-finger Bob Culberstons techniques and tricks, this was pretty interesting.

I feel like I'm stealing a lesson by watching this video. Time to get a job so I can pay for some lessons again. Also a problem I'm noticing with the old Stick shirts, you can't see Stickman when you're playing Stick

Re: LESSON VIDEO: Walking the Line - soloing on a single str
Thanks everyone, Glad you like it. The lesson is designed specifically for Classic and Bari Melody instruments. If you are using an instrument in MR, you will run out of frets at the highest position. MATCHED RECIPROCAL You can either move up one string and drop down three frets, or just leave off the highest position and play everything two frets higher than indicated. RAISED MATCHED RECIPROCAL For this tuning, the melody side will be the same. for the left hand unison part you'll run out of a frets on the unison section, so sorry about that. Each tuning has it's own relationship to each key, and since this video is about maximizing use of the fretboard real estate, I didn't want to compromise that aspect of things. This is the kind of technique that three fingers makes easier, but I'm sure four finger players could figure out a system that would accomplish the same thing. I'm always trying to find elements of consistency in my technique so I can play fluidly. So having the same fingering reflex regardless of what key I'm in or where I am on the board is, to me, a big plus. Have fun!

Three-finger technique, as for me, in quite inefficient (maybe I simply dont do it properly))) As former basist I try to play as much as possible with as lees motion as possible (being in a single position)

For the longest time, i resisted 3 finger approach… now having parked my pinky and really dove into this approach, I see where it is really, really useful. I will use the pinky on some chords, but I am sold on the 3 finger approach.

Very cool and very simple! (Well, maybe not the modal stuff. ) Coming from a one-dimensional instrument (keyboard layout), this really helps me wrap my brain around scalar noodling on a Stick. As far as number of fingers, the only "right" way is the way that works for you. Some prefer 5..
