Hi everyone,

I've been having a little discussion about which version of the Stick Book is the best to use with a Grand tuned to Classic tuning, Classic or Baritone Melody.

My thinking has always been that it's better to use the Baritone Melody version so that you can practice playing the lowest melody string which is next to the lowest bass string, but I just wanted to ask if any of you have any different ideas.

Is it more important to know that first string better?

I have both books and I only use the Baritone Melody one. My 10-string is tuned to Baritone so that make sense. But as I prepare for my 12-string (a year off) I want to know the low string first and I'll have fun adding the high string when the time comes. The difference between a 10-string and the 12-string is the low note, not the high one, I believe. Once I get my 12 I'll see which book I reach for most often.

Don't try to make an existing version fit the new tuning. You need to rewrite your book for each of the 16 tunings of 10 string, 12 string, and alto Sticks out there.

They could use the Baritone book, and get to know the 1st string (of classic tuning) by finding passages played on string 2-5 on baritone, and transposing up an octave.

And I encourage Grand Stick players with a uniform tuning on the bass strings (i.e. no high bass 4th) to do the same.

I'm the kind of person who wouldn't buy a book unless it matched exactly the instrument that I have.

I have always had REAL trouble getting anything from a book, and it's one of those things that I just see as another hurdle.

The point of the thread is that either version works fine for 12-string Classic, with the notes all appearing on the correct frets in the charts. Just wanted to see if the high melody string was more important than the low melody string to people.

Which tuning are you using?, I can't remember.

I use Classic 6+6. Pretty much happy with that tuning although I really fancy looking into Rob Martino's tuning at some point.
