I saw greg do this at the Interlocken seminar
I still don't know how or what that magic was all I know is that it is VERY cool.
To me it was just jaw dropping hearing it
it is just one of those sounds that is just plain cool

watch the video full screen and focus on what his left hand *index finger* is doing
he's "lightly wedging" his index finger(tip/nail?) underneath the higher pitched bass string(s)
from (his) left side of the string and popping the string up with the tip of his finger (right above where the nail ends? )

at around the :32 to :36 second mark you can see it happening the best. pretty cool..

Now I see it ! Wow, that string is pulled quit some distance from the fretboard. Great techique

when i saw him at one of the stick nights it looked like it might have been a weight lifter type belt. it was a while back so i can't be all that postive about it.

Dude can really jam on the bass too - he's got a cool Abe Laboriel kind of strumming thing he starts doing later on in this video:
